Teething Problems Up Front

After the departure of three key offensive linemen you would excuse the Chiefs’ for being off the pace up front and they certainly struggled in their first extended outing of preseason.

All five starting linemen earned negative grades in pass protection with Eric Fisher (40 snaps, -1.4 overall), Jeff Allen and Zach Fulton (40 snaps, -4.6 overall) surrendering multiple pressures. Conceding the most pressure was new right guard Fulton who let up a pair of hits and a pair of hurries, getting started early as Star Lotulelei drove outside of him for a hurry early in the game.

The bright point, and potential pressure for Fulton’s starting job, came from new signing Jeff Linkenbach (27 snaps, +3.8 overall) who surrendered no pressure with the second team and put in a very strong run-blocking display to offer a modicum of hope.
Bonus:

In spite of registering his first sack of the preseason this was a crash back down to earth for Dee Ford (34 snaps, -4.1 overall), struggling in every phase of the game.

The offense needs an upgrade at oline, and at receiver.

I know you know this.

Yep. Probably draft two OL and a stud WR ( I ****ing hope! ) among the first 6 picks.

1st rd - WR !!!!
2nd rd - OT
3rd rd - ILB
3rd rd - OG
4th rd - DB
4th rd - DL

well PFF is stupid, but let's pretend it actually means something for the sake of this thread

If Alex is really dealt a line that seems to be "all-time" bad...

then, uh...

what does that say about his play?

I'll admit I've been nothing but impressed by Alex this year, sans 1 game (Tenn)

The fact he's even been respectable is far beyond what I thought he'd be able to do.

Imagine what he might do with even a respectable line and a real WR or two...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

****in disgrace, a testament to how great Charles and knile are. Its not even like they're failing to pick up blitzers, and are getting confused or something, these guys just flat out get destroyed in one on one situations. I say we go after mike iupati in FA next year one of the best run blocking guards in the NFL, and another solid guy. And then take another tackle, and guard in the draft. Probably both in the 3rd round. This team isn't very far away from being one of the best teams in the NFL. And being a serious Superbowl contender, but this abortion of an o line has to go. And so do the wrs.

All these problems aren't on him.

It's the horrible line making the QB worse, making the WR's worse, leading to stupid coaching decisions.

It's all tied together. As frustrating as it was Reid did a great job this week of being patient and once we had the lead sticking with the run.

Even though doing so must have been like eating sand for him...

.. and this is a good reason for why I scoff at those who claim that his ceiling has been met. Could be... but we won't know until the support cast improves.

He's pretty good when he wants to put forth the effort. That much is true. Aside from him at WR?

what's wrong with our receivers?

he has Bowe, Kelce, DAT looks like a better McCluster, Charles splits out wide and is great out of the backfield...

I don't buy that narrative.

The WR's are getting open. I think Smith is probably a little gunshy about throwing it to them down the field due to various reasons, but to continue to win games against good teams, he needs to take some of those shots.
