Four major art projects for new KCI terminal revealed
The first of four major art projects for the new single terminal airport at KCI have been revealed.
More than 1,000 artists from around the world submitted inquiries after Kansas City announced an international search for artists. The city said the four works of art were chosen because they either reflected the wonder of travel or Kansas City history. The budget for artwork at KCI’s new terminal is $5.65 million. Kansas City’s single-terminal airport is expected to open on budget and on time in early 2023. “The fact that we’ve been through a pandemic over the last year and yet this project remains on time, on schedule, and on budget is a testament to the good work of the team,” said Justin Meyer with the KC Aviation Department. You can see the renderings of the art projects in the gallery below. Entitled "Molten Swing" Entitled "The Air up There" Entitled "Ornithology" Entitled "Fountain of Resonance" "Molten Swing" looks kind of like a mosaic dog or cat to me, it might look cool though but not sure what to make of it at this point. "The Air up There" simply looks like some lights on the ceiling, again it might look better when you're actually there I hope. "Ornithology" reminds me of those attacking creatures in the Pitch Black movie. You just knew one of the artwork they chose would have a WTF moment and this is it. "Fountain of Resonance" I approve of this one. Thoughts? https://fox4kc.com/news/art-projects...inal-revealed/ |

You dipshit I doubt you have set foot near the new airport. They have already had to change signage. The traffic in the evening on Kansas City Blvd is out into Cookingham Dr causing many wrecks. A friend of mine works at another high-profile engineering firm that has done quite a lot of work for the KC Airport Authority to come up with possible fixes. The problem is the room with Berlin Reservoir and several smaller ponds in the area.
I pick my wife up at around 11 pm on Monday and Tuesday. The cell lot which holds about 90 visitors is always full no one seems to leave. I don't even bother with it its fruitless. I park at the Phillips 66 stations or the side of the road that is hardly traveled by the jet fuel storage it is not posted no parking. By the way, they are asking people at the cell lot when they can't find a space to pay a dollar for 30 minutes at visitor parking. So do not tell me it's not a problem.

I'm lucky as I have to only wait in the long procession till I get to the merge lane that takes me to the upper terminal drop-off. It's barren and the businesses have told the employees that need to be picked up after their shift it's okay. The whole airport knows its a big problem like everything the city does turns to runny shit.

If you give it time this new airport is gonna fix a lot of issues in this city, gun violence in particular.
Sure we had a little hiccup recently with Ralph Yarl and Foxnews Grandpa, but just watch the numbers over the summer. |

But that doesn't mean it couldn't have been designed better. There simply needed to be more linear feet of curb space for pickup. I arrived at midnight, hardly a peak time, and it felt congested at the ride hailing area. If that was all the more distance that was available horizontally in the direction the cars drive, than they simply needed more lanes between the terminal and the parking structure. No amount of driver awareness/training is going to make up for that. I was generally in favor of the new terminal. I thought it generally looked nice inside although obviously most things were closed because it was so late. But the pickup area appears to just be undersized.

Many of you are right though that time will be the solution. Those airlines were never going to pay for the new airport. They will reduce the flights that were added during the push for the new single terminal. It will revert back to what it has been since the eighties. Air Freight International. UPS FedEx USPS and DSL will be king once again and they don't need the terminal.

Interesting discussions whilst at the new airport.
MCB is already on life support. Too many places to eat and not near the traffic needed to support the places there The BBQ place has multiple times not had menu items available and they often only have a small number of the beers they say they would have. Small things are constantly failing. bathroom maintenance is terrible, soap dispensers not working or empty. Total revenue for year one will fall far short of budget. Airline traffic not hitting the marks Airport management on a semi panic trying to manage traffic at departures and arrivals Hiring is huge problem. Many new hires have already jumped off this wreck. On the plus side its pretty. and it has places to charge a phone. |

I’ve now flown out/in to the new airport a few times. It’s so much better than the old one. Yesterday the restaurants/bars were around 65-70% full at 10:30 AM. I had no issues parking, grabbing a bite to eat, and finding seating at my gate.
Only legit criticism I can really come up with is the floors are scuffed everywhere.

Pro tip. Get picked up on the departure level if it’s later in the day. They don’t have near the enforcement up there, or the congestion.

I haven’t flown into KCI in forever, but I always get picked up in departures no matter where I fly to. It’s normally a hell of a lot quicker to get an Uber, especially when you don’t have much luggage.

But the old KC terminals was nicer when your ride could be waiting for you and you didn't have to call it from a cell phone parking lot. If other airports have a shitty design, I don't see why a brand new one shouldn't learn lessons instead of also be shitty from the very go if there are better options. If you are picking people up at the departure area to avoid congestion, it is a shitty design. Full stop. Similarly, I can understand that old airports may not have space for security. But terminals built post security concerns, should have more space. For instance, there should be more space to put your stuff into the trays. The Sacramento terminal which is relatively newish, has too little space even though it was built from scratch. And then too few benches to put your shoes back on.

I can’t speak for the new airport, but I would guess it may be a problem due to inconsiderate people more than the way the place was designed. Last edited by Spott; 04-23-2023 at 06:21 PM.. |
