And they can do the Europe thing like Brandon Jennings (IIRC) did. Fact is, it isn't the NCAA's responsibility to pay these kids NBA salaries, because of the NBA's arbitrary rules. And if you're going to pay a basketball player 100,000, are you going to pay every member of the rowing team 100,000 too? It's not in the cards. And you can't base it off the revenue generated by the program, or Alabama would get the top 100 football recruits then the next 100 would go to whichever program could funnel enough money into their programs from some creative accounting. It's just not in the cards man. I'm with you on coaches bailing but kids have to sit a year to transfer. They need to have an exemption for following the coach. |

You cannot say 'pay the players' and at the same time not consider the ramifications. With Title IX, you have a situation where every Michael Jordan, or Paul Pierce deserves the 'pay', these colleges would have to pay every Sally Johnson the same amount for their participation in the 800m relay. There's no meritocracy in a government run system and every college gets government money. I empathize, but if you want to play you get an education, period. It's called paying your dues, and every working schlub knows that in every respect of life regardless how good you are at your craft. You start out low and work your way up.

The ethical solution here, I think, is for the NFL and NBA to offer D-leagues that draft players straight from high school. Mark Cuban called for this a while ago.
If players aren't talented enough to make it to the pros, then they can have a full ride and sharpen their skills in NCAA competitions. The NCAA would likely hate this as much as paying their players, as a league with superior competition could compete with them for ratings and the quality of their games would potentially diminish. the offensive thing is you think an education matters do a kid like Derrick Rose
me and you would CHERISH a free education but we received 12 years of great education before college ... and it was important to us what's offensive is the fact you think the rowing team deserves to be compensated like a basketball or football player ... life isn't fair. Basketball and football generates all the revenue. They get all the profits. Period. Not fair? Play basketball and stop rowing. The NCAA is a huge ****ing sham. I like watching KU as much as the next but I'm not naive enough to think these kids aren't being grossly exploited. Is what it is. |

the 'free educated' and 'room and board' argument is embarrassing and a total cop out
CBS spends billions every year to exploit free labor ... embarrassing |

I do taxes in the winter for decent money. It isn't great money. And I certainly don't cherish my wage, but I accept that it is the compensation and I accept it for the work that I do. So your answer to the inequity between sport is life isn't fair do something else? Well guess what. Life isn't fair. The option is international or NCAA. Life isn't fair. If you don't like it. Do international. Moreover, cash value for a year at KU is what 20? 30 with room and board? And guess what? They don't pay any tax on that. 30 is way better than I ever sniffed until I went to grad school. And I had some passive income coming in too. Sorry man. The outrage isn't there. |

He declared after that junior year, and was the 4th overall pick. He did not have an NBA ready body. His offensive game and Roy's offense meshed very well together. But he has been with 9 or 10 different NBA teams, and has been relegated to the D-League at times. Did he make money, sure, but did he make the maximum for his level of talent? I think the answer is clearly no. His teammates for 3 years were Kirk Hinrich and Nick Collison. They came back for their senior year, made another Final Four, received AA honors like Gooden, and Nick picked up the same hardware for POY. While not necessarily all-stars, they have played their entire careers in the League. Collison has spent his entire career with the Sonics/Thunder, and has definitely maxed out his earnings capability. Hinrich spent a large part of his career with the Bulls, and also maxed out his earning potential. But while at KU, imho, Gooden was better than both Collison and Hinrich. He left early, and they didn't. He got paid upfront, but over their careers the 4 year kids made more. If Gooden had returned for his senior year, he probably would not have been drafted higher than 4, but he would have been better prepared for the NBA. For every Paul Pierce there are a lot of Goodens, Seldens, Selbys, Henrys, etc. Quick cash is great, but more cash is better. But every kid's situation is different, and it takes courage, and self awareness, to not do what's expected, but to do what's better in the long run. TRob is one of my favorite Jayhawks. He had a lot of unfortunate things happen during his time at KU. His little sister's college was taken care of thanks to the kindness people showed him after the passing of his mother, which was his 3rd loss in a relatively short time. He could have stayed for his senior year. And if he had, maybe he would be a successful NBA player, instead of trade filler. I to be fair, I stated that my belief that Josh Jackson returning could benefit his career earnings potential was ridiculous. Sent from my LG-H918 using Tapatalk |

Awesome discussion. Not. Who gives a shit about college pay? This topic has been beaten to death and there is nothing new that's come out recently.

The DLeague just requires a player be 18 if I remember correctly, but they aren't going to get drafted or have any type of large contract with guaranteed money. If they get closer to the baseball side of things to give a platform for players to develop and actually earn at the same time without age restrictions on the NBA it gives the best of all worlds for the players. This allows the elites (lebron, etc) to go straight to the league if they really are ready.
