How old is your car?

Cars have become extremely reliable over the past 20 years. In 1996 the avg car in the road was 3 years old. In 2006 it was 10 and now it's 12.

How old is yours?

2011 Subaru Outback and 2009 Honda Accord. Love both vehicles and plan to have them for at least 7 more years.

My daily driver is a 2005 Chevy Avalanche with ~250,000 miles. Truck has been solid. Wish they still made them as I'd go buy another one.

It's a great rig and an amazing snow car. I get 30+ MPG and have had zero problems. The reeruned stereotypes are all that person's mind. Other than Subaru's advertising, I don't see how a Forester is any different than driving a CR-V, RAV4, Tuscon, Rogue, whatever the **** Ford and Chevy sell in that segment, etc.
The POS I was driving was a 2015 and it was pretty small. I would drive up to 600 miles a day on some trips and by the time I would get out of that thing, it felt like I had just gone 12 rounds. I guess they would be alright for around town and short road trips, but for long road hauls, they blow. To each their own, but not my thing.

I've done a 2200 mile road trip in a week with my wife and two grown sons and all of our crap and had zero issues. I guess if you are used to driving giant pick ups, it would feel small in comparison but it's no smaller than any other crossover in its market segment. Personally, I traded my 2005 Silverado for my Forester because I found I hate driving overly large vehicles and find the Forester perfect size (and I can pull a trailer with it if I need to haul stuff).

Just sold my 2002 Grand Prix GT that I bought in Oct'05. Was really a great car that aside from a couple minor repairs which I did myself never needed anything outside normal maintenance, and probably should have just kept driving it. I was ready for something different, and had been for a few years, so bought a 2015 Volvo S60. Wife drives a 2010 Toyota Rav4 which we've had zero issues with.

Like I said, to each their own. I like being up off the asphalt a little higher myself. As far as pulling a trailer, a Forester wouldn't have shot at pulling the trailer I have, loaded up with my ATV's. I had an F150 that struggled with that load going up hills before I bought the truck I have now. The only time the truck I have now (Chevy crew cab long box Duramax) is a pain in the ass, is parking it around town. I have a company car I drive most of the time around here and use the truck to pull.

Sorry, I wasn't implying that my Forester would pull the stuff you need, only that it fits my needs (small boat, bikes, trash to the dump, etc,) and I didn't need a full size pickup. The point of all of this was that it didn't look like you liked the Forester because it was smaller than what you were used to and not because it "ha ha, a lez-mobile".

For what it's worth, the guy I work with is as redneck as can be and farms and logs on the side (he builds and sells sawmill controls and has built his own sawmill that he's using currently to cut lumber to build a new hay barn). He has a 70 mile commute and buys small SUVs because they get better mileage than his Tundra. He just bought a 2007 Forester after his 2003 RAV4 was totaled after hitting a deer. He loves it and says it drives a lot better than his RAV did. His son, who drives truck for a living, gives him shit about it though.

Had a 97 blazer forever, got rid of it about a year and a half ago and got a 2012 Highlander. Really only did it because I got such a good deal on the Highlander and there was enough broken on the blazer that it wasn't worth fixing anymore. Planning to drive the highlander 2 more years and sell it before it loses too much value. It's part of why I don't normally own newer cars, too much depreciation early on.

Subarus are very popular in the pacific northwest and also in New England, because they go like a mofo in the snow. My Outback is all wheel drive and has great clearance. Comfortable ride. Oil changes are expensive because its all synthetic, but the gas savings is great. Savings on gas over my old Jeep makes about a third of my car payment every month.

That's where I live and you can't throw a rock without hitting a Subaru.

Does you Outback require synthetic? My Forester doesn't but I run it anyway. I get a box of 5-30 Mobil 1 from Costco when it's on sale for $26 (for six quarts) and get OEM filters online for around $4 a piece. Then, the local "Subaru Guru" changes my oil with my oil and filter for $14. I don't use all six quarts, so a change is about $40 total. Not great but it's hard to go much cheaper even with conventional oil without going to Jippy Lube or Walmart.

Yeah about that 2011 Dakota...I paid an absurd amount for it because I wanted a truck that wasn't rusting. Damn thing was immaculate when I bought it, then about the time this thread was posted I started seeing little rust bubbles around the wheel wells. Here's my non-rusted truck as of about a week ago:

2005 Solara...still no rust

Grand Cherokee twice as old with twice as many miles...one small spot in a corner of a wheel well that I only know about because I'm in the process of removing the plastic cladding checking for rust.
