Kaepernick was forced to put his money where his mouth is by pledging a million to the cause. Brandon Marshall donated to veteran causes and lost sponsorships.

That seems much more than appropriate than not letting them express anything. Hopefully creates a disincentive for anyone to do it unless they really believe in their cause. I actually think Marshall's an excellent example because he took some heat, lost a bit of money, but did it anyway knowing what he was getting into and had a pretty well articulated explanation for what he was doing.

Absolutely. Take a stand for every American's right to free speech! One of, if not the most, important things that makes America who we are.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech...

I'm mostly just amused by all the angst this has caused and I'm slightly surprised that the NFL and the teams allow this.

I make a distinction between the symbol and what the symbol stands for. (For instance, I always thought it was silly to get worked up if some dude wants to burn a piece of cloth or a certain book.)

But for me, the flag above all means being an American with certain inalienable rights. Free speech above all else.

No one is talking about curtailing any rights.

The point is expressing OURSELVES in a way to convince the less thoughtful to decide for themselves not to act just any old way they are allowed and be more productive and less inflammatory in their efforts.

Why is the organization called "The Veterans of Foreign Wars"?

That's never made sense to me, as all wars, other than the Civil War, included foreign countries.

Shouldn't just be "Veterans of War"?

I have asked this question several times already.

I dont see any real measuring stick to call it done via Success and I doubt they want to keep doing this protest for years on end.

This isnt the type of thing you can easily measure.

I dont know how you even question whether or not this country has seen marked and steady racial improvement ongoing for a good 40+ years and still going.

Back when it was formed in 1913 there were still many Civil War Veterans alive and they wanted to keep the group separate from the Civil War Veterans group called Grand Army of the Republic.

Quote:
The VFW was reorganized in 1913 as the result of a series of mergers of previous veterans organizations which consisted of veterans of the Spanish–American War and the Philippine Insurrection.[citation needed] The VFW modeled its organization, terminology and ritual on the Grand Army of the Republic—an organization for veterans of all ranks who had served in the American Civil War, but kept the "foreign" aspect of the organization, which excluded Civil War veterans.

It's largely as you probably imagine. It was first formed at the turn of the century, and they wanted to differentiate themselves from Civil War Vets who were well cared for, to lobby for increased benefits for those who fought overseas then returned to desperate straits.

I took a quick look at the 'about' section of their website:

The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service: Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans' pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves.

https://www.vfw.org/Common/About-Us/

That Civil War versus Foreign War thing you mentioned is probably how they named it.

I didn't see that you had already answered the question before I posted. I've seen VFW buildings all over the place since I was a little kid and I never really thought about the name until I read Dane's post.
