Preaseason Unit Discussions: Offensive Line

Per the discussions earlier this week, I wanted to offer an experimental concept. During the preseason, let's discuss each of the units on the Chiefs in a particular thread.

Post your thoughts during the games or between games about individual performances.

This thread is for offensive linemen. How they doin'?

I think it has more to do with Whisenhunt than it has to do with the Titans as a team. Whisenhunt sucks and shouldn't be a HC again.

Hopefully that bet never happens.

Hopefully we have to make a bet about Allen at RG and Stephenson at RT...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Yeah, pretty much. I think if Fisher is injured, they'll move Stephenson over and plug in Allen and promote Fulton before throwing Pughsley out there.

But shit, that's a lot of position movement just because of an injury to one guy.

It would be nice to see Pughsley get reps with the 1's instead of Failaika to see if he can handle the swing tackle role.

Logistically that's how it's gonna have to work I'd think. They can't keep 8 ol active on gameday so some shuffling will have to happen.

Might as well, he can't be any worse than Failzilla...

Yeah, it's hard to imagine that happening. I think you'd be better off just putting Pughsley in and having a TE help him out as needed.

Yeah....unfortunately. I'd rather see that than see Fanaika kept on this team.

Anyway, I don't think Dorsey is going to be searching for new options, especially if they command lots of money and would have to make a switch to the other side of the line.

Levitre is 29. Some team will give him a multi-year deal I imagine. Probably won't be us. And honestly, I'm okay with that. It's Allen's and Stephenson's last year. See how well they do this year and if they'd be worth re-signing a somewhat cheaper extension. If not, I guess we'll go back to the drawing board and maybe look for some more Ben Grubbs-type deals.

Can't wait to draft an OT in the first next year.
With Fisher's 5th year option costing the Chiefs something like $10 million to pick up in a couple of years, OL this year was always a pretty likely outcome. It gives them, at worst, a long-term solution at RT and if they can't get Fisher to either 1) develop into an above average solution at LT or 2) sign long-term when he does, then they'll need to have a backup plan.

That's why I'll never have a problem with the Ford pick. Ford was/is needed to replace Hali. Even if it isn't this year, it'll be next year. Peters was needed to provide an upgrade at #2 CB and likely replace Smith; if you don't take Ford last year, you probably take Bud Dupree this year and you don't end up with Marcus Peters. Or if you take Peters, you simply don't replace Hali next season because at some point this team is going to take an OT in the first.

It's not as though those were luxury picks; those were needed guys because I think we all recognize that a first round fatty is almost a given in the near future.

Nah; I'd move Stephenson and Allen.

We're pretty sure that Stepenson and Allen can at least be credible tackles; Pughsley? Eh, not so much. I think you'd have to really do some scheming to hide him and at LT that's likely to end in disaster.

Frankly, I was pretty unimpressed by Pughsley last week and I really didn't expect that to be the case. He was generally lost and when he wasn't, he was getting over-extended and run-around. I don't think I'd be comfortable counting on him for anything.

Sometimes that just has to happen.

I'd prefer if we start actually HITTING on the offensive linemen we draft and keeping them past their rookie contracts. Which is why I think it's important for us to roll with Allen and Stephenson for one more year just in case they play well.

Would be really nice to have some of that continuity stuff I keep hearing so much about.

Yup.

LTs aren't guards. Sure, sometimes you find a good one, but a legitimate starting caliber LT at this point is damn near like a QB; if you really want one, especially one that will contribute early, the first round is where you'll likely have to look.

Though I do think passing on La'el Collins will burn us for a long, long, LONG time. There's a pretty good chance that that guy ends up a pro-bowler before long. He looks incredible. For all the bitching about Maxx Williams or Tyler Lockett or Randy Gregory or whoever else we didn't take in the 2nd round instead of Mitch Morse, the guy to really moan about is almost certainly La'el.

Hell, they could have had him for a 6th or 7th rounder (la'el). With the legal issues, I get it, but he'd help alot right now at rg, rt, etc

Yeah...but I'm not going to fault Dorsey for not taking him after the 3rd...considering Collins came out and said that he wouldn't sign his contract and he'd re-enter the draft the next year. We could have called his bluff....but if he went through with it....then we lose out on a pick and get nothing for it.

But for a 6th or 7th rounder, who cares? Risk was worth it, didn't turn out. With Dorsey's ability to mine UDFA it wouldn't have been a big blow
