Jameis Winston suspended for student union tirade

Jameis Winston suspended for half vs. Clemson over obscenity incident

By Jerry Hinnen | College Football Writer
September 17, 2014 11:40 am ET

Florida State announced Wednesday that starting quarterback Jameis Winston has been suspended for the first half of the No. 1 Seminoles' game vs. Clemson on Saturday for yelling an "offensive and vulgar" phrase in the student union on FSU's campus.
Deadspin collected a number of tweets from Florida State students who said they saw Winston standing on a table Tuesday "screaming" the phrase (one made popular by a series of recent viral hoax videos), which uses graphic sexual language. (Both links use the phrase and other R-rated language.)

"As the university's most visible ambassadors, student-athletes at Florida State are expected to uphold at all times high standards of integrity and behavior that reflect well upon themselves, their families, coaches, teammates, the Department of Athletics and Florida State University. Student-athletes are expected to act in a way that reflects dignity and respect for others," Florida State interim president Dr. Garnett Stokes and athletic director Stan Wilcox said in a joint statement.

"As a result of his comments yesterday, which were offensive and vulgar, Jameis Winston will undergo internal discipline and will be withheld from competition for the first half of the Clemson game.

"The University and athletics department will have no further comment on the matter."

On a teleconference Wednesday, Jimbo Fisher said his Heisman-winning quarterback's actions were "not a good decision," per Noles247.

"We have to keep learning, keep educating, and continue to make better decisions," Fisher added. "It is something that has to be addressed ... You can't make certain statements that are derogatory, inflammatory."

Fisher indicated he had spoken with Winston about the incident, saying "everything has been addressed and we are getting ready for the game."

Winston's off-the-field actions have been the target of increased scrutiny since the emergence of a December 2012 rape allegation against the redshirt sophomore late last year, one that has led to a current code of conduct investigation by the school. In April, Winston received a legal citation for shoplifting crab legs from a Tallahassee grocry store.

Projection in the first part and opinion and the second part. Remember, Aaron Hernandez went to UF. How do we know he didn't kill someone while at UF? Someone ought to start a witch hunt on UF about having such a student and player like that.

Regardless, I would never stoop so low to call UF a bad or inferior school over a football rivalry. Both UF and FSU are considered the flag ship universities of the state of Florida. I respect UF, but your need to do that shows you have the inferiority complex. Confident people with self esteem don't do things like that. So me thinks you doth protest too much in that area.

However, I do not approve of how your school suspended the rights of your QB Harris before his guilt proven first.Innocence before proven guilty is an American idea. All any university has to do is cooperate with the investigation. In your QB's the charges turned out false.

However, your football team sukks right now. You had to fire your coach.

Also, we have rooted for UF before, particularly my so. He thinks you're being immature.

What hate? I just find it interesting how vigorously you will defend Winston who is an accused rapist, known thief, and certified knucklehead. And you do this because he happens to play QB for the football team at your daughter's school. You make every attempt to portray yourself as a highly intelligent individual on this board, but your defense of Winston and FSU's handling of his situations seem to say otherwise.

BEP, you do realize that when we make jokes about Oakland fans being ex-convicts, we don't actually believe that ALL Oakland fans are ex-convicts. Right?

Literally all, no. More than most yes. It's not always purely a joke by some depending on context and who said it. LoneWolf is butthurt over his school losing a close game due to a certain call. I think he really believes it if he gives advice out such as transferring because of how the local police handled a rape allegation.

I would like to move onto Hernandez and some of the trouble he got in at UF because I just finished reading that. Pretty bad they kept him. Plus a grand jury has indicted him this summer for double murder. UF harbored a criminal for years apparently. That's okay cause it's a better school.

Not even the Criminole alums I work with will defend them or Winston anymore. It's an embarassing chapter in school history when it should be a triumphant one given the national championship.

Hernandez was involved in some shootings while attending UF and a few other bad incidents. Seems like he still played but I don't have all the details. They knew about these incidents though. You're also convicting FSU, without all the facts too. They're being investigated for their handling. I have yet to see a final determination. As to the cops, there wasn't enough evidence. Usually, when there isn't enough, they don't like to pursue. They're generally not that good on pursuing rape even when it doesn't involve an athlete. Don't know details on that but could be a lot more "she said, he said." But the girl changed her story at least 3x and not the witnesses of Jameis. Let's not forget what happened in the Duke LaCrosse case.
