One thing that didn't ring right with me last night was the final words JS had with the condemned. None of them acted particularly alarmed that the guy they killed came back to life outside of the first dude. I was really hoping for a moment where Alaister tried to comprehend how the hell this guy just keeps getting the better of him but nothing. It was fine, but I really wanted a moment and the writers didn't give us much of one.

Never actively disliked Thorne.
There was very little malicious in the way Thorne went about his business. He simply had his way of seeing the world and a fierce loyalty for the Watch. He'd have put the watch ahead of anything, including Snow. He didn't stab Jon because he disliked Jon, he did it because he felt Jon was leading the realm to ruin. Ollie, the simpering little shit, was having a temper tantrum. But Thorne was just doing what he felt was right, just as Jon would've done. Was it that much different from Snow taking off Slynt's head because he didn't want to to go East Watch? I feel like we got 'a moment' there and it was among the best of the series. Thorne took his lickin' like a man; recognized what needed to be done and nobly accepted his punishment. He wasn't awestruck or some bootlicker asking Snow to write to his wife. He owned his play, gave his reasons, and accepted the consequences.

In fact, the book made a little less sense to me unless you see the raising of an army to take Winterfell being the straw that broke his back. I mean hell, if you managed to not kill the guy when he opened the gates to people that have been killing your own for decades, why lose your shit now? To me, opening the gates for Wildlings was the far greater sin of the two serious mis-steps for Jon. While objectively the wildling decision made sense, it's hard to be objective when your whole life has been an effort to keep this very thing from occurring and now Snow just up and throws up the portcullis. Objectively, the army for Winterfell was worse because there really was no justification for the Lord Commander to be doing it, but subjectively and emotionally, I'd think letting the wildlings in was far more likely to get him killed.

Remember, Jon Snow can take The North and use the exact same justification as Henry VII. He can take The North by right of conquest and inheritance.
