It’s official.

Rookie first-rounder Patrick Mahomes will start for the Chiefs against the Broncos this Sunday in Denver. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced the move during his usual Wednesday press conference.

“Every snap that he gets is a valuable snap for him whenever he has that chance of getting in there,” Reid said. “It’s invaluable and fortunately, we’re in a situation we can do that.”

The Chiefs are locked into the No. 4 seed on the AFC side of the postseason regardless of Sunday’s game outcome.

Reid added that Alex Smith will take the scout team reps this week.

“Fortunately we have a quarterback that understands it,” Reid said. “[Smith] is having a phenomenal year. It’s an MVP-caliber year, so he understands the situation and this won’t detour off of anything he’s doing the remainder of the season.”

Though Mahomes has yet to play, Reid said the season has given him an opportunity to get to know him, and Reid confirmed Wednesday all the scouting reports checked out.

“You hear what he’s all about but until the player is there, you really don’t know, I’m saying as a person,” he said. “He’s everything everybody said he was, a great person—works hard, loves playing—all those things, we’ve seen. Obviously, he hasn’t played in the game other than the preseason, but he’s done a great job of the other stuff.”

That changes Sunday.

Mahomes will have success in his first 5 games as a starter. It takes that long for a defense to have enough tape to learn tendancies.

After that, we will then see the long term potential.

Lol. In previous years, I would agree. But this season, that has not been the case. Smith has gone deep more and with a higher percentage of success than every quarterback in the league this season. He has been far from unwatchable.

I believe that since this game has zero impact on our season Andy is going to have a fun game plan in the mix and let the kid air it out and have some fun.

One of the main byproducts of resting Smith is Andy gets to see the kids decision making in a real game. Handing the ball off 30 times isn't going to give PMII the exposure they are looking for. Its possible Smith could get hurt in the playoff game and they need Mahomes to finish.

Not saying they will throw it 45 times but I could easily see 35 pass attempts this game.

Man its going to be interesting. The AFC QB position is going to have major changes in the next few years when Brady and Ben retire, Rivers wont be around long either.

Luck is probably never going to live up to the hype and Marriotta is up and down etc...

We have a shot at having the top QB in the AFC if Mahomes performs.

Mahomes made the swing pass more effective. He just put the ball where the receiver or back was naturally turning the right way to get upfield. It’s the difference between completion percentage and accuracy.
