Moreover, relapse was always a concern. They'd have been irresponsible as hell to try to sign him to any sort of long-term deal (and yes, it would've come at great cost) prior to showing that he was physically recovered and could sustain that.

Yes you are; you're talking about the Chiefs pattern of approaching players in-season to discuss deals. Hudson's a deal that didn't get done but they absolutely approached him. It suggests that they perhaps did approach Berry.

Why would you sign away your right to FA if it didn't come at a premium in this environment? And frankly, I'm not convinced any of them were overpays. Bailey's deal has turned out that way because he got hurt but that's the nature of those early signings. Fisher's is the same way; if he stays healthy, this won't be an overpay. If he doesn't, it will be. Kelce's wasn't an overpay.

They're in the bottom 5 in cap space because they had to throw money at mid-tier players early in the Pioli regime to re-build depth. As they go further along, they'll continue to build depth internally and contracts for players like Daniel, Devito, Fasano, the Bowe mess, etc.... won't be necessary.

The first step? Not making that same mistake with Eric Berry.
Daniel, Devito Fasano, and Bowe are not on the cap. The dead cap money comes from extensions or reworking contracts with guys like Ben Grubbs and Fanaika, as well as eating $4 million on Hali's extension. The lack of cap money comes from the dead cap money, along with giving extensions at bad times to guys like Jah Reid and Josh Mauga, who are replacement level guys that should be earning a minimum salary.

Fisher and Schwartz on the end for a few more years, much needed stability for the line, I like it a lot.

This is a big finger to Berry for asking for elite safety money when he's merely above average, with the huge risk of cancer returning or the chemotherapy having caused too much damage.

You don't know the histology of his cancer, nor do you know the type of chemo he received.

Funny that you can't apply this same logic in regards to what happens behind the scenes during contract negotiations.

Unless you're Adam Schefter, you don't get to violate HIPAA.

Regardless, a person isn't "Cancer Free" until the cancer is undetected for five years straight. I hope that Berry remains cancer free but the fact remains that it could return at any point.

I have a close friend who's dealt with lymphoma for the past decade. She was clear for two years, was able to conceive a healthy child and 6 months later, it returned. It's been like that for her for what seems like forever.

Again, that's why histology is important.

No, I'm saying that terms of contract negotiations are freely and consistently leaked to help with leverage from either party. You can't leak medical information without liability.

The two are not similar in any way. You were trying to equate them.

Just think about contract escalation, bro. We all knew this deal had to get done. I know you wouldn't want to spend another high pick on a LT. We were able to sign this guy, who appears to be ascending, to a deal that didn't break the bank and will likely look like a steal in a season or two.

Just goes to show that Berry would already have a new contract if he was being even remotely reasonable.
