I'm really glad this got done. Glad for Jamaal and glad for the Chiefs. We're awful damn lucky to have this guy and obviously he's not trying to be greedy. At the age of 27 these next 3 years are his money years and then things normally turn South. It was right for him to want this.

Draft a guy early next year (we'll probably be picking top 15) or get Bray/Murray ready. No reason to spend $17M for one season, and then give a 32 year old QB a new deal.
Sure there is. The 32 year old QB may be worth it. QB is not RB. They can keep playing after 30-31. The question about Smith is whether he can be Flacco/Eli, not whether he can be Brady/Brees/5-head/Rodgers.

I don't see why it's such a huge if (at least as big as you're making it out to be) if he is the fit in the offense that he's made out to be.

It's as much about fit in a system and matching a guys talent to that. If he had spent those other years with Andy Reid, that would stand.

LOL.

"Take more"?

Yeah, just a bit. JC took a $2M increase.

A $2M increase puts Smith around $10M, and by all accounts he wants nearly double that.

Reportedly, he's already turned down a $17M AAV deal. **** him.

This deal has been in place for awhile now. Jamaal Charles knew he was getting paid. The reason he didn't show up to camp today is because he has a $1M roster bonus due the second he reports. In order to prevent that from triggering and hitting the salary cap, Jamaal couldn't report.

Once his deal is finalized, I would suspect that roster bonus gets converted to a signing bonus. That would mean that, instead of counting one million against the cap, it will count 250k against the cap (1M over 4 years), thereby opening more room for Houston/Smith.

Now...

When Jamaal said he was not reporting to camp, everyone assumed it meant hold out. What it really meant was he can't report until the deal (which was already in place) is finalized. I mean, Dorsey has not made a habit of letting any of his deals get leaked. This one got announced, because it's done.

This also leads me to believe they have a deal in place with Justin Houston, which is why he is reporting to camp.
Exactly what I told my brother when I read about the "roster bonus" the other day.

With the salary cap expected to go as high as it is reported, salaries will rise.

I'm curious to see how high though.

Time to pay Houston, and as ChiefsCountry said, close the checkbook. If we're going to spend money, spend it on the young players that might still be here when this team can legitimately compete for a championship, and not the guys in the twilight of their careers.
Its not like JC is Ray Rice, or Knowshawn Moreno. Yea JC is our biggest offensive weapon but he is a top tier player not a slightly above average/average guy.

I also think many of you are way overstating how far we are from legitimately competing.

If we let Smith walk after this season we will much farther from being a competitor than we are now for sure.

Our biggest question marks are OL and WR in my opinion and neither of those positions should take a millenniam to fix.

I think anything thinking rationally knows the answer to that.

I'm trying to go through the league and think of the starting QB's over age 30. I might be missing someone, but they've all either won a Super Bowl or shown WAY more and shown more consistently than Alex Smith.

If Andy Reid is the QB guru some of you claim he is, it shouldn't be that difficult for him to groom a young guy and start using that cost savings to help us lock up other young playmakers.
