With the monitor its a better deal. I bet if you looked hard you could find an even better one though. Depends on how hot you are on it.

Got my rig finally going last night. Seriously ground shipping from tigerdirect takes forever. Couple of issues:
--The (Free) Raygo case I got has a rolled metal bar right next to PCIE 3.0 socket. It blocked my HDMI cable from going in all the way... ugh. Had to take pliers to bend it out of the way. --XBMC does not play nice with my GTX 770 when setting to "Match refresh rate to match video" is enabled. IE Watching 24fps video causes stuttering on video when XBMC changes the refresh rate. Yet if I manually change the refresh rate myself in the Geforce Control Panel it plays just fine. A minor annoyance. Playing all content at 24 or 60 plays fine. It is only when the video player tries to change it will it stutter. --Went to register my GPU online at PNY (lifetime warranty), the serial number is only on the video card itself rather than on the box or anything. That is crazy and now I have to take apart my rig tonight to get to it. --I heard a minor coil whine after a while. It was sporadic and not too annoying. A few bumps in the road. Ran the Bio Shock Infinite Benchmark and the slowest segment was 55 fps. Avg was 120 fps. I am happy.

Simply for me to brag. I just hope all my rebates come in. Some things I have already. (The SSD was free with a net top PC I built previously) I have 360 Controllers from my two RROD Xboxes. Mouse and keyboard from my previous computer. etc.

Knowing you have a 780? No thanks. You win.
My build could have been even cheaper if I was not doing emulators. (That is what the 2TB Green drive is for) Also if I stuck with the supplied thermal compound (Apparently, that can cost you 3 degrees of cooling under load.) and a cheaper motherboard. (I wanted headroom for overclocking, plus this is my 3rd build with Asrock and I love them.) Hell, I might of been able to get it under $800 if done right. lol

I also love my Asrock board and any others I have used in builds over the years. TBH I am a little jealous of these 'budget' builds, because they come so close to matching my big budget machine in many ways. I did also build my machine at the very release of the x79 chipset and 3930k, so I payed the price. Still, kudos, you built a machine along the lines of 2.5-3x as powerful as an xbox one for a little more than 1.5x the price. (had to get my console dig in there) |

Delid sounds so scary. If I ever have temperature or noise issues, I will probably do it.

Alright, I am ready to get a card.
An Asus GTX 660 is now $179 at Newegg, with a $20 gift card. The Asus GTX 760 is $239 at Microcenter. We are looking at an 80 dollar difference in price for a 20% increase in performance. It is going in an Inspiron, so overclocking is probably not going to happen. Is the extra cash worth it? I have an I5 3000 series processor with 16 gb of ram. I will probably play games like Dayz a lot in the future. Oh, and any budget power supply suggestions are welcome. |
