At least 10 moviegoers were killed and 39 injured at a cinema in the Colorado city of Aurora in the Denver suburbs. They were attending a midnight showing of the new Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.

The theater was packed with a lot of people, many of them young fans, at the time the shooting started, 9news reports. The violence erupted some 15 minutes after the movie started, witnesses said.

Some say that when they first heard the shooting, they thought it was some new type of special effect.

Local media reports that two gunmen were involved in the rampage. An explosive device was set off during the shooting, injuring several people.

Witnesses said the gunmen were probably wearing body armor and gas masks and used some kind of a tear gas bomb in the attack.

Some reports say police have apprehended one of the assailants while the second one is still at large.

Police have cleared people from the scene over fears that another explosive device might be on the premises.

Aurora medical services were alerted to attend to the large number of injured

Maybe in some scenarios we do, but this one I'm sensing it probably wouldn't have helped. But who knows, maybe someone that had a firearm and was trained to use it could have taken the guy out. Doesn't really matter now though.

Nichole Griek said her 13- and 14-year-old daughters were in the theater when they saw a man dressed in black and wearing a mask step out of the shadows at the front of the theater. They thought he was part of the movie presentation, before he threw out a canister that started smoking and opened fire.

Griek's daughters and their friends bolted from the theater, leaving behind their cellphones, shoes and other belongings. Griek's daughters were unhurt.

"You'd think you'd be able to drop your kid off at the movie theaters, but you can't," she said.

Thank goodness there is some good news coming out.

I wouldn't doubt it. I use to manage a theater back when i was younger. I don't how this place was setup, but our emergency exits were long, unused, creepy halls that no one ever ventured in. No employee ever wanted to go down them alone and we often joked about throwing party's back there because no one would ever know.

If this place was set up anything like ours were, i could imagine the killer being able to stash guns back there for at least a few days before anyone would notice.

They could simply go in before the movie starts, do some drugs and come out when they're ready.

We are a civilized society, but when it comes to this we need to torture the piss out of this guy and keep him alive for years while doing it.

A simple execution is not enough.

Agreed. This guy knew going in that he would probably get caught and go to prison for life or get the death penalty. So he was ok with that. Let's give him something he's not ok with. TORTURE for years, then death.

Why does anybody who isn't law enforcement need to be allowed to have this type of firepower? This story really pisses me off. Also he apparently had an accomplice? That person needs to be caught asap so they can be tortured together. First thing, cut off their penises.
