Da'Rick Rodgers Released

Chiefs release WR Da'Rick Rogers
Adam Teicher, ESPN Staff Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Talented but troubled wide receiver Da'Rick Rogers was released by the Kansas City Chiefs just hours before they were to begin their mandatory minicamp. Da'Rick Rogers has caught only 14 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns during his NFL career.

Rogers, 23, was one of the SEC's best wide receivers in 2011, when he caught 67 passes for more than 1,000 yards and scored nine touchdowns for Tennessee. But he was subsequently thrown off the team for disciplinary problems and transferred to Tennessee Tech.

Rogers has been unable to make it in the NFL. He signed with the Chiefs, his third NFL team, in January but hadn't been impressive during offseason practice. The Chiefs also may have felt comfortable releasing Rogers because of the emergence of rookie wide receiver Chris Conley, who has played well in practice.

Rogers pleaded guilty in May in Indianapolis to resolve a 2014 DUI case. He was sentenced to one day in jail and six months of probation.

The Chiefs also released offensive lineman Kelvin Palmer, who recently signed as a free agent, and signed offensive lineman Tavon Rooks of Kansas State.

I hope you are right. Time will tell. I will not be surprised if in week 4 I see that Avant is leading all other WRs at either targets or catches other than Maclin.

If that happens, then we had a serious injury or two...or three.

But if Avant is the go to guy....Chiefs are in some serious trouble.

Yeah I don't mean overall. I meant just for the #2 WR. I edited the post.

Hope I'm right? If Avant, a 32 year old slow guy, is the #2 receiving target/yardage leader, the Chiefs won't win 3 games.

Avant's best season was five season ago, when he had 679 yards. He's 32 years old, his production has steadily declined and he signed with a third team in less than a year. He only had 300 yards last year between Carolina & KC.

Either you don't know anything about him and you're talking out of your ass, or you have him confused with someone else.

Not receiving just at WR. Of course he will likely be behind Maclin, Charles and probably Kelce. With Avant being more of a possession type he will not have big yards.

What? So then Conley, DAT and Wilson are completely and utterly ineffective in your scenario.

Again, what?

It's like reading something written by a four year old.

I just don't get all of the Jason Avant hate. What'd he do to evoke such ire? Seems to me that he was a reasonably effective receiver for the Chiefs last year. Played in 5 games, had 150+ yards, 13 receptions (9 of which were for first downs), had the longest catch of the year for our crumby WR corps, etc.

The guy wasn't exactly a bullet coming out of Michigan. I believe he ran a 4.52 40 and had a 37" vertical. Not bad.

Obviously, this guy is not going to take the top off of any defense, but the guy is a crafty receiver who came in here and looked to me to be, at minimum, a decent vet.

Why all the hate? Is it because many of you think he's slow? How in the world could you tell that??? I think many of you are falling for the old, "the guy is old and therefore is slower than molasses and is pretty much washed up' gambit. Frankly, I didn't see that last year.

Dane, I think you have some good takes. Wondering why such vitriol for Avant???

It's not hate or vitriol. It seems that way when someone has to defend their stance repeatedly.

The thought process is basic.....if a guy is going to be your #4-5 receiver at best, then why waste that spot on a player who isn't going to develop, but actually get worse.

People are trying to justify that with, "well, he's gonna teach other players".

For some of us, that's not a good enough reason. There are coaches and other players who can do that just as well.

People are claiming he's productive. He's never been productive in his career. He's put up journeyman numbers at best.

The problem is, he made one 41 yard catch and people are now smitten over him. He's a JAG. That's it. And as such, shouldn't be a player you count on in any real capacity.

My assessment was that he was reasonably productive last year for the Chiefs, but obviously the guy's not a HIGH CALIBER WR. BUT, he does seem to know what he's doing out there, and managed to get open at least as much as most of our other WRs last year.

Unless his skills totally erode this year, I think you could do much worse for a #4 or #5 WR. Clearly he's not going to improve, get faster, etc, so if you feel the 4 and 5 WRs need to be developmental guys, well, then I guess you wouldn't keep him on the squad. Personally, I think there's room for a crafty vet who can step and garner Alex's trust.

Again, I'm not lobbying that we should DEFINITELY keep him, but at least he can catch the damn ball.....something that is apparently difficult to do in Chiefs uni.

BTW, for the record, I'm a Wilson guy. I thought he was the best WR on the team last year. Too bad he had that high ankle sprain early in the year. Guy's arrow is definitely pointing up!

I have no problem with keeping Avant in the group of 5 this year, we're anything but stacked at WR and this guy apparently brings the hands, professionalism and route running expertise that Reid & Co. desire.

Most here seemed to think Greg Jennings wouldn't be a bad grab but guess what... they're the same guy, reliable and steady freddies who wont go 70 yards for the touchdown but will do what they're otherwise supposed to be doing.

Jumping down my throat here is pointless, I'm anything but overselling the guy... but he's not just some washed up old dreg quite yet, atleast according to the coaches.

I'll take their word for it, for now.

You're not going to step in as the 4th or 5th receiver, or better yet, the 6th or 7th offensive weapon, and have any sort of real meaningful impact.

Some posters are delusional and think the Chiefs will put him in for 3rd down situations....on a critical moment of the game, the Chiefs would be reeruned to not put the ball in the hands of at least one of their 3 best options, Kelce, Maclin or Charles.

He had around 300 Yards last season. That's not productive. And keep in mind that those games he caught passes for the Chiefs, were also against some of the worst pass D's in the league.
