Cleveland Browns to cut Johnny Manziel

To the surprise of nobody not named Hog Farmer...

The Cleveland Browns will move on from Johnny Manziel just two seasons after they drafted him in the first round.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday the team will cut Manziel when the new league year starts March 9.

Browns executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown released a statement Tuesday regarding Manziel's most recent off-field incident.

"We've been clear about expectations for our players on and off the field," Brown said. "Johnny's continual involvement in incidents that run counter to those expectations undermines the hard work of his teammates and the reputation of our organization. His status with our team will be addressed when permitted by league rules. We will have no further comment at this time."

Per league rules, the Browns cannot cut Manziel until next week at the earliest. Rapoport reported the Browns have $20 million in cap space for 2015, which the carried over to 2016, like all but three teams did. Because Manziel has guarantees in his contract, they need space to absorb the cap hit in 2015. Currently, they have no space, which is why they will wait for the league year to start.

Rapoport previously reported that when new coach Hue Jackson took over the team, Manziel's fate was sealed.

Browns' statement makes that eventuality clearer.

Manziel is being investigated for an alleged incident with a 23-year-old female, the Fort Worth Police Department said in a statement on Saturday. The alleged incident occurred late last Friday evening at an apartment complex in Fort Worth.

According to the statement, officers responded to a report of a possible assault and made contact with the 23-year-old female, who was unrelated to the caller. The complainant stated that she was involved in a disturbance with Manziel, her ex-boyfriend, earlier in the evening in Dallas. The officers were unable to locate a crime scene within the Fort Worth jurisdiction

After the complaintant advised the Fort Worth P.D. officers of concerns that she had regarding Manziel's well-being, they attempted to locate him by calling his cell phone, checking locations in the area and searching the area with the assistance of an Air One Unit. Following the search, it was determined that Manziel was safe and in no danger.

The Fort Worth Police Department is still actively working with the Dallas Police Department to determine if a criminal offense occurred.

An NFL spokesman added, "We are aware and looking into it."

This marks the latest of several incidents involving Manziel as a member of the Browns. The team announced last month that it had fined the second-year quarterback for missing a scheduled medical treatment on the final Sunday of the season.

Manziel was also benched ahead of a Week 12 matchup with the Ravens after a video surfaced of the quarterback partying at a club in Austin. A week prior to that, Manziel was cleared of any wrongdoing in a domestic violence incident. During the 2015 offseason, the quarterback spent 10 weeks in the offseason in a Pennsylvania rehab facility specializing in alcohol and substance abuse.

Its sad. Hopefully, he can get the help he needs. You tend to have to hit the bottom before you can rebound. Though hitting bottom doesn't mean you will rebound..

Hitting bottom doesn't have to include losing everything. Wherever you are when you find a way to stop, that's a perfectly adequate bottom.

If his dad can't help him, who can? There's zero chance any team signs him this offseason.

Addicts never 'get well'

They just learn to manage their illness and that can never happen until they admit they have a problem.

Even Ryan Leaf thinks Manziel has issues

http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/cowbo...-like-a-mirror

RVING, Texas -- As he watches Johnny Manziel go through some of the same issues that cost him his NFL career, Ryan Leaf reached out to the quarterback's former agent to offer help.

Leaf, whom the San Diego Chargers picked second overall -- one spot behind Peyton Manning -- in the 1998 draft, was out of the league after the 2002 season, which included three starts for the Dallas Cowboys in 2001.

Leaf spent time in prison twice in part because of a Vicodin addiction. He has been out of prison since December 2014.

"It's like a mirror, it really is," Leaf said Thursday on The Afternoon Show with Tim Cowlishaw and Matt Mosley on KESN 103.3 FM. "I listen to and hear stuff that's being said and what's going on and it's like a mirror for me. I can relate to so many things ... There's a solution. There always is but it's so hard to see when you're on this pedestal and [think] you don't need help. You don't need to be vulnerable because you're a big, strong football player and help means [being] weak. It doesn't. Asking for help might be the strongest thing you ever do. So it's hard because it was so fun to watch him. Great college quarterback. He's very capable and people want to cheer for him.

"But now Cleveland dislikes him so much to the point, like San Diego to me [where] it's at the point you just have to get out of town. By me getting out of town and getting a new start, it didn't work for me either. I got to a great place in Tampa with coach [Tony] Dungy and that team but I couldn't restart it and I'm worried that he's not going to be able to catch on somewhere else and be as successful as he's capable of being. I hope he can."

I'd have to argue that while we don't get cured, we do get well. In fact, depending on the nature of our recovery, we often get much better than we ever were before our addiction tried to kill us.
