You "took it" wrong.

Sheen said he was having night sweats, migraines and cluster headaches. He went to his doctor, had a battery of tests and found he was HIV positive.

Maybe I'm just a risk-averse kind of guy, and admittedly I was young in the 80s when AIDS was in all the papers. But if I was a single guy in some woman's apartment and things were starting to happen and she said, "By the way, I'm HIV positive", I would just shake hands with her and get dressed. Maybe that's unfair and too conservative, but the tradeoff of sex versus AIDS is pretty tilted for me toward not getting AIDS.
