Da'Rick Rodgers Released

Chiefs release WR Da'Rick Rogers
Adam Teicher, ESPN Staff Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Talented but troubled wide receiver Da'Rick Rogers was released by the Kansas City Chiefs just hours before they were to begin their mandatory minicamp. Da'Rick Rogers has caught only 14 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns during his NFL career.

Rogers, 23, was one of the SEC's best wide receivers in 2011, when he caught 67 passes for more than 1,000 yards and scored nine touchdowns for Tennessee. But he was subsequently thrown off the team for disciplinary problems and transferred to Tennessee Tech.

Rogers has been unable to make it in the NFL. He signed with the Chiefs, his third NFL team, in January but hadn't been impressive during offseason practice. The Chiefs also may have felt comfortable releasing Rogers because of the emergence of rookie wide receiver Chris Conley, who has played well in practice.

Rogers pleaded guilty in May in Indianapolis to resolve a 2014 DUI case. He was sentenced to one day in jail and six months of probation.

The Chiefs also released offensive lineman Kelvin Palmer, who recently signed as a free agent, and signed offensive lineman Tavon Rooks of Kansas State.

Who is our #2 WR? As of right now it is Avant. Conley might take that place by mid season. MIGHT

And I'm not expecting break out performances by Maclin. As our only legit threat he'll get their best CB, perhaps doubled, and we know Smith isn't throwing to a doubled WR.

Beating our passing game wouldn't be that hard. Double Maclin, force Alex to throw to scrubs or the Rookie, and wait for questionable line to give up sack...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

A defense doesn't have to shut them down. Reid does that all by himself...

Thread about Da'Rick Rogers immediately devolves into six page argument about jason avant. ****ing CP...

I want to talk about Dee Ford, so I think I will start a thread about Doug Pederson.

And for the record, Jason Avant has value. A 32 year old vet who has NEVER relied on speed is different than a guy whose skill set is slipping with age. Hines Ward is the prime example.

BTW the term possession receiver means a guy whose prime value comes as a guy who will catch the ball and hang onto it. If you need six yards, he will be six yards downfield and catch the ball. Others might get open with running lanes or take the top off the defense or advance the ball after the catch. Possession guys don't. I know many think that makes them shitty players and great ones can do the same thing while providing other skills. A fair point, for sure. In a vacuum, there is nothing wrong with having ONE guy inyour corps with this skill set, especially when he is helping young guys become pros.

Specifically for the Chiefs, whose roster spot would avant be taking that right now you can say is categorically better while providing the same skill set? I mean, yes... Best case scenario is that he doesn't make the team, because there are better receivers behind him. But going into training camp, how valuable is this guy? If Hammond is going to ascend, having avant to train with will be helpful, if even just through the preseason.

And people need to recognize the difference between teaching and coaching. Leading by example as a player is very different than explaining or demanding as a coach.

If jason avant makes this team, it won't be terrible. It won't be the end of the season. If he doesn't make this team, fantastic. It means young guys are bringing the kind of consistency to their game that he offers, while also having more physical ability and potential. Where, exactly, is the problem?

No, absolutely not.

Avant is a slot receiver, not a #2 outside receiver. As of today, Maclin and Wilson are #1 & #2 although that's subject to change in training camp.

At no point should Avant be anything above a #4 option, if not #5.

No. Reid would be ignorant for giving Avant reps as the 2 when two young guys like Wilson and Conley are clearly gonna be the ones seeing action this season.

That's interesting. I don't remember much of him in the slot. Are those all pass plays or runs included?

I was not talking specific position of SE, FL, or Slot. Avant will most likely be out #2 WR in terms of catches, targets, etc. With Alex Smith as the QB he is not going to trust the rooks very much especially early in the season. Smith and Maclin are working on chemistry and such. I am sure they will be fine, although I would not be surprised and think it is likely that Alex will favor Avant over a lot of his other options early. Avant will most likely be where Alex is looking if he can't get the ball to his first option.
Remember this isn't just about the specific WR. Alex Smith and his tendencies have to be calculated in there as well.
You are cross talking options and position depths also. Just because Avant may be behind Maclin, Kelce, and Charles doesn't make him the #4 WR. It makes him the #4 option, which is still the #2 WR in terms of targets, catches, and etc.

He won't be anywhere close to being our #2 in production. Maclin, Wilson, Conley and maybe even DAT will have more yards and catches than him.
