If the Seahawks drafting Wilson was buying a ticket for the lottery, then can't that be applied for when the Chiefs drafted Brodie Croyle or Aaron Murray?

There are what, two teams out of 32 that have been consistent contenders with QB's taken late?

I guess even though the odds are worse, I should be happy that they drafted backups - simply because someone else succeeded with that strategy?

One thing Seattle and NE have in common - they drafted those guys and weren't afraid to play them early. IIRC, Brady rose from 4th to 2nd on the depth chart in a matter of months.

Wilson started as a rookie just months after they signed Flynn to a big deal.

Murray isn't getting the opportunity Brady and Wilson did. So yeah, they bought the ticket, but haven't bothered to check the numbers. And probably won't before his rookie deal expires.

I think I first used this one about ten years ago: they keep buying cases of Timex's hoping that they'll find a Rolex stuffed into one of the boxes by accident.

That's a better analogy than a poker or lotto ticket.

Hardly. The pack knew Favre's time was ending and spent a 1st on QB. That's being smart.

The Seahawks signed a FA at QB and, because they don't put all their eggs in one basket, also drafted a QB and let them compete. Again, smart, not luck.

Denver has made a point of having a franchise QB. They drafted them, traded, and signed them. They used every method possible to get a good QB. That's not luck. They failed on guys like Plunger and Greasy and Tie-bow but they kept trying.

Funny how good teams are "lucky" when they land a QB. It's like you support the idea that KC doesn't have one because of bad luck instead of $#itty drafting and decision making...
All those teams got lucky getting their QB's. Don't act like they weren't

Yeah, Seattle was terribly lucky to play a rookie 3rd round QB just months after signing Matt Flynn to a big FA deal.

While the odds are poor you're going to find a QB that late, they are nil if you don't give the kid an opportunity.

Most teams would have rolled with Flynn and Wilson would have rotted on the bench.

Exactly. They liked Wilson, and was impressed with him enough they threw him right in. Worked out well.

We did that with a 3rd rd QB in the Herm era. He didn't win us one game.

Hasn't KC done that as well by signing Smith in FA and then drafting Murray? True, Wilson was selected in the 3rd round and Murray in the 5th, but most attribute Murray's slide to the 5th round to nothing more than his ACL injury the year before, otherwise he likely would have been drafted much much higher.

Problem with that is that they didn't just sign Smith in free agency. They traded two second round draft picks for him. And then gave him a massive contract.

Pair that with Daniel's contract, and we've spent two second round picks, a fifth round pick and a large chunk of our salary cap and haven't gotten anywhere close to where Seattle has.

Whereas they got to two superbowls and spent a single third round pick and a fraction of the money on Wilson and Flynn ($26 million contract in 2012).

Well, sure. But that's not what should piss you off. What should piss you off is that we had Matt Cassel and then drafted Donald Stephenson ONE ****ING PICK BEFORE RUSSELL WILSON.

News ****ing Flash, bro. Those teams are successful NOT because of any amazing salary cap handling, but because they all ass-backed their way into franchise quarterbacks.

The ****ing Packers are the closest thing to a legit "we drafted a franchise QB" and they break your rule about spending a first round pick on depth.

You rail against Dorsey for drafting Ford and simultaneously exalt the Packers (and by proxy JOHN ****ING DORSEY) for doing the same thing.

The Broncos were dog shit until Peyton Manning decided to go there and singlehandedly make everyone better. Oh, and they have cap room because they're about to have to pay EVERY ****ING BODY.

The Patriots are so good at the cap that they have next to no room. And that's with discovering the best QB in history in the sixth round. And then having him give hometown discount after hometown discount.

The Seahawks have cap room, because they let guys like Browner and Golden Tate leave. BUT THAT BREAKS RAUSCH'S UNBREAKABLE RULE OF LETTING PROBOWL TALENT LEAVE! PRO BOWL TALENT LIKE BRANDON ALBERT AND FLOWERS! (please nevermind that Flowers and Albert were long past being probowl level players for 16 games).

And, of course, it helps the Seahawks to have a franchise ****ing QB on the roster whose being paid A COUPLE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS A YEAR.

God. Damn. This. Place. Is. ****ing. reeruned. Sometimes.
The Patriots are probably not a team you want to use as an example. They are where they are right now because they have a $25m cap hit with Revis' placeholder second year. Once that gets worked out, they'll be under the cap and good to go.
