You hit the nail on the head: it's a results-oriented business. Nobody gives a shit about luck. If the Royals manage to WIN THE WORLD SERIES (who would have ever thought we'd be talking about that!), we'll be having parades where we celebrate the greatness of the team, the GM, and Ned Yost.

And they will deserve all of the accolades.

Not to mention the opportunity cost. If you spend $90M on Shields, that's a huge chunk of change not going to improving our offense. In terms of our ability to improve our pitching or offense internally, it's obvious we're much further away offensively. Guys like Bonifacio, Cuthbert and Dozier aren't ready and may never be ready. Not sure there's anyone else on the farm that would remotely project as an upgrade to a player on the big club in the next year or so.

I don't think I'd be upset if we brought Shields back for all it would represent (investing in payroll at the major league level, helped lead us to postseason, etc.), but intellectually I'm not sure it's the right move.

On the other hand, he couldn't have had any idea that Wade Davis would turn into this type of contributor. In fact, Davis probably off-set much of Shield's value last year, and may have been the key factor in the Royals not getting into the postseason.
The Davis - Odo/Leonard part of the trade will be interesting to evaluate in the future, especially if we end up trading Davis in the offseason. While Odo is exceeding expectations with the Rays and Davis has found a role as a premier set up man, Patrick Leonard is quietly putting together an impressive resume in the Rays system.

I actually don't think it's luck. It's just like any other job, sometimes learning from a seasoned veteran can help you learn more quickly. I think Shields has had a positive influence on all the other pitchers. That's hard to quantify though. That's the only thing about letting him walk that worries me, but at some point Duffy and Ventura are going to have to carry themselves. Having a talented ace to push the other guys makes everyone better.

News Alarm: James Shields (SP - KC) The Royals reportedly plan to offer free agent pitcher James Shields a five-year, $80 million deal.

Vegas line: Baltimore 5-7 KC 6-5

Stats:

Baltimore 6th (runs) 3rd (era)
KC 9th (runs) 4th (era)

Orioles first in HR, last in steals. Royals last in HR, first in steals.

Fun facts:
If you removed Aaron Brooks' 2IP of 12 ER, the Royals ERA edges Baltimore for 3rd place 3.43 to 3.44

Question:
Baltimore had to remove two injured Orioles Machado (113 OPS+) and his 327 AB + Davis (98 OPS) and his 450 AB. They replaced them with Flaherty (82 OPS+) and Hundley (76 OPS+). Would the offenses look identical now too?

Verdict:
Contrary to talking heads, this matchup looks dead even.

Though I'm still hesitant about that last year, 80 million over five wouldn't be a terrible investment if we were able to front load it (20 mil a year for the first two, 13ish mil for years 3-5).

The Royals could plan out the first two years by cutting Butler, Crow and Collins while trading away either Davis or Holland (this is hard to stomach, but it's tough to lock up nearly 20 million to a set-up man and closer, especially when Herrera has been so effective and Hoch could return on the cheap).

Once Shields' salary comes down, the Royals would have a shot to lock up one or two of their prospects who are set to leave in 2017-2018. Alex has already implied that he'll sign another team friendly deal (he said he, not his agent, will be the one signing the contract), meaning that the Royals could still maintain a very solid core if Shields is swayed by our offer (which, for all intents and purposes, would be a team friendly discount for the Royals).

uhh.... wow. That could actually do it. Not sure if its wise, but that kind of offer would have a chance.

ok, I'm calling BS, I went to rotoworld and this is what I saw:

Quote:
Shields is one of the premier starting pitchers set to hit the free agent market, but the Royals indicated to Shields' agent at the trade deadline that they were prepared to offer him a multi-year deal this winter. An unnamed general manager told Heyman he thinks Shields will get somewhere in the neighborhood of Anibal Sanchez' five-year, $80 million deal. The Red Sox and Dodgers, among others, may also be in play for the 32-year-old.
I did NOT see any kind of "news alarm" that the Royals would actually offer what that unnamed GM was musing his value may be. This could be someone reading rotoworld too quickly and tweeting. I also checked Rotoworld's official twitter feed, nothing.

I still don't understand where that is coming from. Seems like Rotoworld is getting it from SI, who is getting it from Jon Heyman... who said people believe Shields will get that much money.

I do not believe rotoworld is reporting this at all.
