The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

Gruden thinks Alex Smith is outstanding, can make all the reads, and make all the throws. Outstanding.

This is all just posturing. Dorsey is bluffing, thinking the 49ers have no other suitors. If he's right, we might drive the price down or get him for nothing.

There seems to be very little point in the Chiefs agreeing to a deal before the day SF would have to pay Alex Smith if he's on their roster, unless that date is after the draft. KC could use the possibility of that occurring to leverage a better deal. SF is not going to risk being stuck with his salary in a dispute over a 5th versus a 4th round pick.

So it all makes total sense. The Chiefs act like they are flat out in love with Geno Smith. They balk at SF's desired compensation for Smith's services. The Chiefs play chicken with them as long as they like.

I'm pretty sure they will get their man in the end.

This statement is TOTALLY wrong. I was hoping to join the bandwagon. Sorry.

On the other side of the coin, folks on your side of the argument seem to be very forgiving and dismissive of red flags.

As long as you are arguing only Dalton vs. Smith watch both interviews again. Up to the point of the Dalton "slip" he looks and sounds very sharp and natural while Smith delivers obviously scripted dramatic lines. The whole method of communication is a lot of times a good window into someone's psyche.

Look, I haven't lost hope on Geno yet, but I don't see many more opportunities for him to put me, the fan, at ease down the road.

Dorsey hasn't done anything so how is he bluffing?

This is a rumor, nothing more.

This is much closer to fact than many other speculations. I agree it makes sense.

So it's no coincidence that the same day Geno Smith has a fantastic combine workout that this story drops from the rafters?

I think their preferred M.O. right now is to go either after A. Smith or Foles (over drafting Geno at 1). They are probably rather equal options for KC. What's happening smells like they are sending signals to the Eagles that they are the most serious club to trade for Foles, BUT "we also have the Alex Smith option."

Meanwhile, why would they need to hurry up and trade for Smith? Actually I think either SF or Philly will blink. neither really benefits by keeping those QBs on their roster past a certain date. And you woul think both QBs look at the Chiefs situation favorably.
