He wanted total control of everything, while fine, definitely slows down the process considerably. Take James Cameron, for example, who is directly responsible for Lucas selling to Disney. Avatar came out years ago and he's been working on the three sequels since that time, with the release dates moving every year.

Cameron's being smart about the sequels, much like Disney has done with Star Wars. Hire smart people to frame out the Universe, then hire lots of talented writers to work together to fill out that universe.

And while Lucas sold his company for $4 billion, which is a very big number, Disney is worth a staggering $172 billion, with far more resources at hand than Lucas ever had on his own.

Still, just seeing this gives you a sense of joy and some assurance that it won't be a repeat of the prequels.

The one thing that the prequels managed to do at least is temper some of the unrealistic expectations a bit.

I'm going in with the idea that it will be good, but not expecting it'll rise to be on the level of say Empire. If it turns out better than "pretty good" then I will only be pleasantly surprised.
