http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap300...2017-finalists

Quote:
The 26 semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2017 were trimmed to 15 finalists during Tuesday's Gold Jacket Finalists special on NFL Network.

The 15 modern-era finalists join three other finalists to comprise 18 finalists under consideration for the Class of 2017.

Former Seahawks safety Kenny Easley was announced as a senior finalist last August by the Seniors Committee, which reviews the qualifications of those players whose careers ended more than 25 years ago.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue were announced as contributor finalists in August by the Hall of Fame's Contributor Committee that considers persons who made outstanding contributions to professional football other than players and coaches.

Please explain how those aren't HOF numbers.
The NFL HOF is one of the toughest to get into.

Jason Taylor put up great numbers. But everyone always felt his numbers were padded. Nobody felt he changed games the way someone like Bruce Smith did. He deserved to be in over time. But not first ballot his first year.

Only 4 DEs in history have gotten in first ballot. Bruce Smith, Reggie White, Gino Marchetti, and Deacon Jones. Those guys were on a total different level than Taylor. Michael Strahan ran circles around Taylor and it took him a really long time to get in.

****ing joke that Davis got in before TO, and before Priest Holmes, who had better numbers w/ similar touches.

and Jason Taylor was first-ballot b/c he was a media darling, just like the overrated Jerome Bettis, who should not be in the HOF at all.

Well, apparently not everybody, since he's now a Hall of Famer.

His numbers are better than DT's numbers.

Well, I disagree and so does the HOF. I'm guessing you didn't watch many Dolphins games because the guy was unreal.

Weak argument, as usual.

I absolutely agree about Bettis but Taylor's numbers were insane.

Had he been part of a great football team instead of mediocre teams like the Dolphins and Raiders, no one would disagree.

139 sacks for shitty teams, when generally, he was the only pass rushing threat, is pretty amazing.

I don't have a problem with Taylor getting in. I do think Taylor getting in on the first ballot is overrating his production. He, like Derrick Thomas, was also a one-dimensional player, but he was never as disruptive as Thomas. Therefore, if Derrick Thomas took five or six times to get in, I fail to see how Taylor gets in on the first ballot when he was an inferior player.

He is not even close to being one of the top 5 DEs of all time. Him being one of only 5 first ballot DEs implies that he is.

There are tons of DEs with better numbers, better playoff success, and all around better players than Taylor that took years to get in. Strahan is a perfect example. Taylor was always accused of being not nearly as good as his numbers. He was excellent, but he wasn't considered the terror that guys like Bruce Smith were.

Just because he was voted in, doesn't mean it makes any sense. He deserved to get in probably after a few years. But first ballot is a complete joke.

While I believe that Taylor was definitely HOF worthy, I agree that the timing is a tiny bit suspect.

Forget that it took DT five years: What about Kevin Greene?

That was an insane wait for a guy that had 160 sacks and coached the LBer's for the Packers when they won the Super Bowl.

That's where I'm at too. Strahan. Doleman. Greene. These guys had to battle to get in. He should get in, but getting in first ballot doesn't make any sense. He's only the 5th DE in history to do it.

Putting on my conspiracy theory hat here but it seems very odd the stars aligned nicely for the NFL to put all their media darling poster boys in 1 HOF class. Warner, TD, Jason Taylor. All these guys are basically clean, good looking, poster children for how the NFL should be represented and played and it just seems like a giant clean up campaign to get these guys out in front to kick off the 2017 season and set a "good example" and make the shield look good.

They will get on stage, preach about religion, how they played the game the right way, they are all well spoken, no broken English, clean records, etc.

Dude, you just agreed with Hamas literally a few posts ago that it seems weird for him to get in first ballot.

I never once said he doesn't belong in the HOF. But getting in first selection when only 4 others in history have done it, is a complete joke.

I don't care what the #'s say. He's an eventual HOFer. But no, he is not even close to being in the top 5. How can anyone even dare to put him in the same company as guys like Reggie White and Bruce Smith who were absolute terrors?

Congratulations to Morten Andersen, Kenny Easley, Ladainian Tomlinson, and Kurt Warner.

Jason Taylor? Meh, okay. I don't really care.

And whatever about Olandis Gary. That's a media pick, not a deserving football pick. But at least it guarantees that Jamaal and Priest will get elected since they're far more deserving.
