Evan Mathis: Released. Can we afford him?

Eagles release Evan Mathis
Posted by Mike Florio on June 11, 2015, 3:56 PM EDT
Detroit Lions v Philadelphia Eagles Getty Images

Evan Mathis didn’t get a new contract from the Eagles. He’ll now have a chance to get one elsewhere.

Per a league source, the Eagles have released the 11-year veteran only two days after word surfaced of his unhappiness with the team’s decision to rescind an offer from 2014 to pump up the back end of his contract.

A third-round pick of the Panthers in 2005, the 33-year-old Pro Bowler becomes a free agent. He can sign with any team.

Mathis joined the Eagles in 2011, qualifying for the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons. The move suggests that Eagles could find no trade partner for Mathis, who was under contract through 2016.

Mathis contends that the team offered an upgrade to his deal a year ago, and that the team pulled the offer from the table, explaining that, because Howie Roseman no longer is the General Manager, the offer is no longer valid.

Mathis had been due to make $5.5 million in 2015 and $6 million in 2016. The Eagles will take a cap charge of $1 million in each of the next two seasons, but they’ll avoid the $11.5 million in cash and cap space.

Chase Daniel was an undrafted undersized QB who never started an NFL game til the 2013 season yet people are more against giving a guy who was actually drafted, received praise from coaches, and has a better arm than Daniel a shot. Chase isn't saving our season if he has to play multiple games. Hell we all know our defense is the only reason this team could make a run in the playoffs anyways.

You don't give a guy "a shot" because he was drafted. That's just dumb.

Either a player has proven, through OTA's, practice, meetings, training camp and preseason that he's ready to take the field and has earned his position, or he doesn't.

To this point, Murray has done none of the above and until he does, he should not see the field during regular season, barring injury to the players above him.

Funny, but the Chiefs didn't get knocked out of the playoffs the past two years due to Chase Daniel's play.

And not every QB that's ever drafted becomes a good to great NFL player. As a matter of fact, the ratio's probably closer to 50:1. Giving Murray playing time when you've got a solid veteran on your roster is wasting the season and is a really quick way to lose a locker room.
You mean we didn't get knocked out in 2013 when he started a game after the Chiefs had cliched not only their spot, but their seed in the playoffs?

You mean we didn't get knocked out in 2014 when he started after the Chiefs had already been eliminated from the playoffs?

Stupid ****ing argument.

And no, he didn't play well in either game.

He was, at best, mediocre.

I am not even arguing to start Murray or Bray.

I am just arguing the stupid shit coming from your keyboard about Daniel.

I think this offense is ****ing SET at the skill positions, but I have said in every OL conversation that going from Hudson to Kush at center is a downgrade.

It's worth the cost to upgrade the OL with a premier player that already knows the system rather than roll the dice with Kush, IMO. And I'm a fan of Kush.

Evan Mathis would immediately upgrade one of the line positions with a premier guy.

Mathis
Morse
Grubbs
Allen/Stephenson

I want this team to have every chance at winning at least one playoff game this year and adding a guy like Mathis to the OL would go a long way towards achieving that goal.

Why is this conversation being dominated by talk of Chase Daniel? There are other ways to find the money than just cutting Chase.

Sign Houston to a deal that allows us to bring in Mathis. Restructure Alex. Restructure Chase. Do whatever can be done with Berry's contract. Cut Allen or Fanaika. Structure Mathis's contract with a big signing bonus and little cap hit this year or whatever, and pay him next year when we have the 2nd most cap room in the league.

IDK what all is possible, I just know there are more options than just cut Chase.

Shit! Is Chase Daniel the highest paid backup in the league? Just looked it up and YES! I think so... that's not good. I'd rather pay a starter, but like I said before there are other ways than cutting Chase.

We should definitely look into restructuring Chase's deal though! $4.8M!!!???

You can't restructure a guy in the last year of his contract.

Yes, you did say that Kush is a downgrade.

But you also said you think we have enough talent along the rest of the line to make up for that.

If that is the case, then there is no need for another guard.

This doesn't have to be the best line in the league.
It just has to be good enough.

And according to you, it was going to be.

If he wants a big deal for multiple years, he will have to find it elsewhere...but if he wants to settle for a 1 year deal for a couple mil, I'd give him a job in KC.

If that keeps Kush on the bench, so be it.

Building long term is great and all, but I was to see them put the best possible team out there for 2015 and adding Mathis would absolutely improve the roster.
