The 'Qualifying' session will set the grid for Sunday's race. The new F1 qualifying format, which involves live elimination, will be implemented tonight.

Shunt - F1 terminology for a wreck. There should be about 20 of those tonight during the new qualifying format.

F1 Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit

From Formula One's official Website:
That is a VERY interesting way to set the grid. I like it better than NASCAR's right now.

That being said, one has to wonder just how many Q1/2/3 wrecks will affect the larger effort. With passing being so hard in F1, starting position is all the more critical.

I still don't dislike NASCAR's, I get why they do it, but it sure would be nice if NASCAR would park the cars immediately after their qualifying run and make them start the race exactly like they qualified (fuel level, tires, wedge, tape, everything).

Oh okay - Just got your message...I am impressed. I am looking forward for you to teach me...

Everyone has set a time on the track. At the moment it is 1. Hamilton 2. Raikkonen 3. Verstappen (18 yrs old) 4. Rosberg 5. Vettel

Edit:

Eliminated Q1: Haryanto (Manor) and his teammate
Gutierrez (Haas) he was good on one lap but ran out of time
Grosjean (Haas)
Pascal Wehrlein Sauber? (rookie)

Too hard to keep up. This is crazy!

Hamilton goes the quickest...World Championship #4 coming at the end of the season. Mercedes cars are the fastest.

Engineers and teams are frustrated - At this point no one is on the track for fans to watch. People spent $300 to sit in their seats and no is out there. What a cluster-****!

Teams are saving tires for tomorrow's race. Some drivers did not even try to improve their lap. Unreal.

This new qualifying format will never work.

Starting Grid so far:
1. Hamilton (Mercedes), 2. Rosberg (Mercedes), 3. Vettel (Ferrari), 4. Sainz (Toro Rosso), 5. Ricciardo (Red Bull), 6. Raikkonen (Ferrari), 7. Verstappen - Toro Rosso (18 yr old phenom), 8. Massa (Williams). I give up.

Teams spent half a billion and did not improve the pace to beat Mercedes. Starting grid looks almost the same as the past two years.

Now I am confused...Why is Ricciardo and Hamilton back out?

Scratch the starting grid - I'm done.

Above: Edit, Edit, Edit x10.

OK, I'll agree, this format may never work..

And no, I didn't get to watch (and that may be a good thing...)

It's Formula 1, Baby!

F1 drops new qualifying format. The Brits are calling Bernie a muppet! Love that insult...

THE GRID

There's been a couple of penalties, with Valtteri Bottas dropping five places to 16th after an unscheduled gearbox change on his Williams, while Rio Haryanto (Rookie) was given a three-place penalty after colliding with Romain Grosjean in the pits during qualifying yesterday.

1) Hamilton 2) *Rosberg (Mercedes)

3) *Vettel 4) Raikkonen (Ferrari)

5) **Verstappen 6) Massa (Toro Rosso-Ferrari & Williams-Mercedes)

7) Sainz 8) *Ricciardo (Red Bull-Renault)

9) Perez 10) *Hulkenberg (Force India-Mercedes)

11) *Alonso 12) *Button (McLaren-Honda)

13) Palmer 14) Magnussen (Renault)

15) Ericsson 16) *Bottas (Sauber-Ferrari and Williams-Mercedes)

17) Nasr 18) Kvyat (Sauber-Ferrari and Red Bull-Renault)

19) Grosjean 20) Gutierrez (Haas-Ferrari)

21) Wehrlein 22) Haryanto (Manor-Mercedes)

*My favorites - Best drivers in F1
** Max Verstappen - Most likely a future star in F1 - It will be interesting to see how he performs in his sophomore year.

Three Rookies: Pascal Wehrlein (Manor-Mercedes), Rio Haryanto (Manor-Mercedes) and Jolyon Palmer (Renault).

Edit: Keep your eye on Max Verstappen, the youngest driver in F1 history. He made his debut last season at age 17. He turned heads with his aggressive overtakes. Toto Wolff says Max is on Mercedes radar for the future.

Max had a clash with Grosjean (Haas) last season with his aggressive overtaking - very impressive.

Max drives for Toro Rosso. It is an Italian F1 racing team owned by Red Bull. The team runs Ferrari engines. Red Bull will race with Renault engines this season and rumor has it Daniel Ricciardo will move to Ferrari next season - Love him...He is considered one of te best overtakers...

NBCSN - lights are about to go out!

Here is a map of Austrian GP. Notice where the DRS areas are on the map and when a driver can use the "DRS"...

Massa overtakes Hamilton!!!

Hamilton is on soft tires that I believe he used in Q3 according to the new rules- Ham could not switch to new tires to start the race ...

There are new tire rules this season - Teams are allowed to pick their tires but have to also run two compounds that Pirelli chooses for each race - Everything is so ****ing confusing.

I have to read the new rules again...also new communication rules between engineers and drivers during the race.

Oh MY God Big crash. Alonso is upside down in the gravel. Gutierrez also involved.

LOOK AT ALONSO's CAR - nothing is left. WOW!!!

Edit: Both drivers are okay and hugging each other.

Edit Replay: Alonso's car hit the gravel trying to overtake Gutierrez and barrel-rolled up the barriers.

Ham is struggling on the mediums at the restart - Seb is kicking ass. Finally, the Ferraris are beating the Mercedes. I've been waiting two years to see this.

Seb posts a new fastest lap, but only 2/10's quicker than Rosberg...

Edit: Kimi is in. Something broke on his car...Hope Seb's car is reliable.

Edit: Seb leading, Rosberg 2nd, RICCIARDO 3rd....Now that Kimi retired - Ricciardo can take over the final spot on the podium. Hope the Aussie can pull it off.

Edit: Hamilton running 6th behind Max in the Toro Rosso. Although, three cars in front of him have to pit.

Edit Ham is all over Sainz but cannot find a way to get around him - Ham's tires are finished. Rosberg looks strong.

Edit: This race is between Seb & Hamilton. Two Toro Rosso's in fron to Ham had problems with the tires. Max (18 yrs old) yelling at the engineer - says he wanted to pit first...Kid is good.

Ferraris pit - going with soft tires. OMG 5.6 seconds for Seb. So Rosberg now leads. What a mess up by Ferrari pit crew.

Edit: Max wants his teammate Sainz to get out of the way so he can go after Palmer...Good battle going on.

Seb is 19.2 seconds off the lead (Rosberg). Seb is pushing and a second quicker than Rosberg.

Oh no Ham is in DRS range on Ricciardo -

Damn Ham the muppet overtakes Ricciardo.

Nice, Grosjean (FerHassi) running 6th. He's not pitting again, therefore this could be a great result. He has a lot of potential.

Rosberg, Ham and Seb and Ricciardo

Ricciardo flying on the new supersoft tires.

Broadcasters "Max Verstappen tells Toro Rosso that their strategy is a "****ing joke" for not letting him past Sainz. His dad was a former F1 driver. LOL Ricciardo sets the fastest lap of the day.

GloryDayz: you went to sleep?

Max ran into the back of his teammate and spins out -

Racing 101: Never try to take out your teammate

Seb runs off the track & spins ... That wrecks his chances of catching Ham.

Victory for Nico Rosberg!

Mercedes

2. Lewis Hamilton
3. Sebastian Vettel

Wow! Awesome result for Gene Haas and Romain Grosjean - coming home to finish 6th in their first grand prix.
