All I know is the first half of the season we played one playoff team. The second half we played five. None of those teams had bad defenses.

The chargers raiders, broncos, eagles and cowboys were all some of the bottom 10 ranked defenses in terms of giving up passing yards.

The titans, texans, bills and colts are either top 10 or right there.

So basically it depends what defensive metric you wish to use

We started out 9-0 against teams with "better defenses" and Smith not playing well according to everyone. Not a single good game in the bunch right.

Smith played much better the rest of the season and we went 2-5 while the defense shit itself.

Did we play teams with killer offenses and total shit defenses for those 7 games? No we didn't.

Stop worrying about Smith and worry about the defense like you should.

I agree. Smith played better against the playoff teams than the regular ones and the defense did not. Then again we played Manning twice, Rivers twice and Luck twice. When you play good quarterbacks you generally give up more points.

Problem with that is, for he first 9 games th defense was basically on a record pace of scoring, turnovers, sacking the qb etc.

Per usual at cp, it's in the middle of the argument here.

And I don't think anyone is arguing that smith was "terrible" in all 9 of the first 9 wins

I think this argument is stupid.

There are two simple facts, and the rest is just periphery bullshit.

The defense went to shit after the first 9 games.

Alex Smith played more aggressively and improved over the last 6 games.
