I don't want to put the idea in Moore's head, but I would think he could get good value in trading bullpen pieces. Every GM can see what the Royals have in the pen. If Moore wanted to get a power bat for RF, I'm guessing he's got more credibility to do it now (due to his ability to identify pitching).

I wonder what it would take to get Soler and/or Baez from the Cubs. Probably too much to contemplate, but they would fit nicely with the team's window. They need pitching though, which we have in spades.

I don't want Baez, at all. At least unless they are willing to trade, like, Sugar Ray for him straight up lol

If given a chance to play everyday, Baez is going to set the single season strikeout record next year with ease. He's young, so there's that. But he can slug 35 home runs and be a negative WAR 2B, I don't even know how that is possible, but it is.

From Baseball Prospectus at the end of the year.

Note the present and future grades. 2-8/20-80 scale. 4 is average, 5 is high average, 6 is plus, 7 is plus-plus, 8 is legendary.

Billy Butler would be a 2 on the running scale. Yordano Ventura's fastball would be a 7. For comparison's sake.

Platoon Baez and Moose at 3B. Both are two outcome hitters. Whoever is sitting could feasibly come off the bench to pinch hit as well.

More than you probably want to spend. It would cost a ton.

With Kris Bryant likely moving to RF and Baez likely moving to 3B, that clears up some of their IF jam.

Soler - LF
Bryant - RF
Baez - 3B
Castro - SS
Alcantara - 2B
Rizzo - 1B

That's a really sick young core, and I imagine Epstein will try to keep it together.

The Cubs will sign at least one of Jon Lester/James Shields/Max Scherzer in the offseason and add that guy to the rotation with Jake Arrieta (who had a breakthrough season and has dyanmite stuff), Travis Wood (serviceable back end starter with slightly better upside), and Kyle Hendricks (highly effective as a rookie this year).

Add one more SP off the FA wire (second-tier guy), and they're set to build. Probably won't win in 2015, but will have a potential dynasty in the latter half of this decade.

You're stretching (but I like it). Rizzo is a lefty and Alcantara is a switch-hitter.

A search result indicates that I didn't say that. But I definitely had my doubts around the trade deadline.

John Lamb might still turn into a useful/useable back-end starter, and Dwyer could be useful out of the pen. Monty is toast, though.

The pitching development system also changed as a result of that group failing to impact the way it was expected to (and they've been drafting more finished products - Finnegan, Zimmer and Manaea are all college pitchers with much more polish than any of Montgomery/Duffy/Lamb/Dwyer).
I was intentionally being a bit unfair by leaving Duffy out, but my point isn't tarnished at all by your fair points. Lamb as a back-end starter is not living up to expectations. In his case, injury happened. That could also happen to any of the current crop that DeepSouth already ordering Hall of Fame rings from Jostens for.

Cubs should also trade for Holland. They'd just be ... wow. Not sure what they'd have to offer that would make me trade Holland, though.

Interesting note about Soler's contract, which I did not realize: He signed a major league contract and now he actually is now out of minor league options. Further, when he hits arbitration, he can (WILL) opt out of his deal, electing for arbitration.

With prospects, assuming all other things are equal (injuries and etc), I typically would take 3 players of similar grade and expect one to bust, one to hit his reasonable floor and one to actually reach his upside.

Some people would add a 4th player instead of 3 and say they expect that player to be below his floor but still useful (Luke Hochevar or Wade Davis as examples here).

But, like I said in the first post about these pitchers.... TINSTAAPP. Have to temper expectations.

Though, one spot for optimism here... Finnegan and Binford have been successful at higher levels than any of the starters from the 2011 group, and Zimmer has been successful just as high as Montgomery or Lamb were. Manaea is one step below at High A.
