Because? I need ammunition here. This is the first I've heard about the idea of keeping the prospects and just spending the Shields/Davis money on other free agents. Were Shields and Davis being paid a lot less than market value?

Phil Hughes was not a FA when we traded for Shields. Yes we picked up$25-30m of extra payroll. Yes we could have signed others and kept Wil "0.0 war" Myers. No, there was no certainty we would sign a good pitcher.

For every Hughes there is a Nolasco. Minn couldn't tell a diff and its doubtful we'd have. FYI Shields was the 13th best pitcher in MLB past two seasons and no FA option was even close to that.

I don't like Yost mentioning Shields, Vargas and Guthrie before Ventura when talking about the rotation for this series. Are we going 3 or 4 starters? Honestly, I'm more confident with Ventura starting than anyone on the staff right now. I agree with pitching Vargas and Shields in Baltimore because they are statistically better on the road. I think you gotta go with Ventura the first home start so he can come back and pitch another game if necessary, yes?

Yost makes me nervous

Shields in games 1 and 5, Vargas or Duffy in Game 2, Ventura in game 3, Guthrie in Game 4 is what I have heard so far but nothing is set in stone yet other than Shields.

Soren Petro mentioned that it sounds like the Royals might go pitching heavy in this series because of rain in the forecast in Baltimore this weekend and KC early next week.

I think a lot of us would have liked to bring in Hughes. However, we certainly couldn't have forced him to sign here.

Orioles are going to hit about 8 homers off Vargas if we put him in at that stadium. I'd much rather take our chances with Jguts. At least save him for KC.

Something that isn't easy to quantify regarding Shields is how much leadership he has brought to the team and the amount of wins that could have led to. We can see the on field intensity but off the field guys like Duffy have talked at length at how much he has helped them become better pitchers. It is no guarantee that Duffy is the pitcher he is right now and may turn out to be without Shields' mentoring him.

My feeling as well. I'd go Shields, Ventura, Vargas, J Guts (If Duffy is truly not in the rotation), Shields

Will they only hit 7 off Jguts?

I don't see any reason to not start Ventura in game 2. He's has the lowest ERA regular season out of any starter of qualified innings..

I heard this as I was falling asleep, and figured I’d mention it in here. The “expert” on Fox Sports Radio isn’t high on the Royals at all – “Orioles are a great team, Royals simply took advantage of opportunities…the Angles thought they could show up and win, they gave no effort…the Orioles have the better team in every facet of the game (rotation, bullpen, offense, defense)…The Royals could have exploited Detroit’s weaknesses, I would have had them moving on if that was the matchup…”

I’m not sure I can disagree that BAL is likely the better team, but that seems pretty harsh. Even the show host got on the guy for trashing KC. And KC beating DET? Did he watch any of the season series with them?

I wouldn't have Guts or Vargy pitch in Camden.
