How can we improve Chiefs discussion around here?

I've mentioned my disappointment in the quality of discussion in a few threads lately, but figured it's worth a more meta discussion to figure out 1) if I'm alone in this perception and 2) if there's anything that can be done about it.

Back in the old days, I walked 20 miles to school in the snow uphill both ways!

Err...wait. I mean, ChiefsPlanet was THE place where I got my Chiefs news. If an article was worth reading on another site, it was linked here. If there was a tweet with Chiefs news, it was posted here 30 seconds after it hit Twitter. If someone said something worthwhile on the radio, someone would post about it on here. And (with all due respect to those who like megathreads), you could glance at the front page and have a pretty decent idea of what the big news was for the day.

After returning home from the boonies on Sunday morning, however, I honestly had no idea how the game Saturday even went. I ended up visiting Arrowhead Pride and Chiefs Digest just to get a feel for what went down. Am I the weird one for thinking that that sucks?

Anyway, just figured it's worth the discussion. If it turns out that everyone is pretty content the way things are, I'll just bookmark some other resources and move on with life. But if I'm not alone, what can we do to make things better?

IMO it starts with the team. If we're doing well it's going to be great. Only mega threads on game day. Most topics need their own threads. Now, not saying every little thing needs its own thread. I personally like mega threads. Like the training camp one. It's great. Tags should be utilized better in those. Like for specific things. I would monitor trolls and ban them for certain times and such more often. It's annoying when you're trying to discuss things and ya got Alex smith trash everywhere. I know he's not great but some in here come in a thread, say he sucks and just derails a thread. (I'm no Smith homer, but enough is enough at some point). Just my two cents.

correct me if I am wrong but 2009 was when we Blew everything up and got Cassel

and 2013 was when we blew shit up and got Alex smith.

If anything all your graph shows is that it might be time for regime change if the current plan doesnt work out...

I mean theres some different ways to look at these data

Creation of Original Content

I sadly missed out on the herm era...LOL...but let me go on

Now I may be wrong..but from my perspective this board was and still is the best place for talking about the chiefs. (since 2010 and probably before, sadly i wasnt here prior)

I think its just wearing people down , all of the losing and regime changes with zero playoff wins to show.

I blame myself too, I'm not pointing the finger at others but I find myself thinking 'why bother' creating a video or cartoon or even picture when its going to be just a meh season....

Like personally I feel like I would invest more time in some posts if it even had the POSSIBILITY of being an epic season. I just don't see that possibility with this crew....

Yet we all enjoy new content...even in rough times or meh (8-8) seasons.....

I like the idea of figuring out how to sift through the content and make sure more relevant content is put on the front page and not shit on by people.

I really don't see that happen much though...the truly good content people post seems to get heaps of praise....maybe I am naive but I really think new content would spew forth if we just had a couple seasons in a row where we all believed this was a team that could win a playoff game...

I would be very careful doing too much to moderate or try and force things, because what you have here is truly a microcosm of how fans feel. Good bad and ugly, this is the state of things right now. 20 years + with no playoff wins...If that makes you want to turn away, so be it......but if you do you might miss an epic turn around!

It will be a sweet sweet moment when our Chase Daniels or Aaron Murray or whoever emerges in a couple years and we do string together some solid seasons.

You guys for the most part have done an OUTSTANDING job letting this place just BE. I trust that when the Chiefs get better, and PROVE they are better...that more content and less bitching will happen.

I dunno. Just how I see it.
Yeah, content creation is really what it comes down to. While it would be great to have 20 people on the level of gblowfish doing things like "10 Things...", I doubt we'd ever find enough people dedicated enough to pull it off. Instead, our content has to be our discussion, and it has to be easy to read and participate in without (too much) fear of people just telling you to STFD and .

I think when some asshole is obviously taking a thread over just to be an asshole and stomp out every bit of optimism around, that user should be banned from that thread at the very least.

You really can't be like Luke here. You just have to embrace the hate like the Emperor says. Most if the good posters left during the Geno days. That is when everything changed. Other boards have better chiefs talk and news. It has been that way for a while. If you like group thinking or you like ****ing with group thinkers this is the place for you.

I guess what I am trying to say is hang in there, you do a great job. Even your graph shows that when there is optimism (new regime for example) the OC and thread count is higher.

Its just possible that optimism is at a low level right now...

In light of that I just caution you not to draw too many conclusions because I truly think the state of CP mimics the state of the Chiefs. Theres a reason you dont have 20 Gblows. I bet you anything if we were to win a playoff game this season, and we go into next season with some momentum and looking like we were in command of the division there would be a bunch more Gblows willing to spend their time on the chiefs. Hell even clay might make some awesome videos and I might get my voice-acting job back.

I also caution not to make too many changes because when the chiefgs do start winning and do make people want to invest time and generate OC, you dont want to blow a winning formula...Minor VERY minor tweaks should work.

I definitely agree that it's possible that this entire "issue" is actually external to ChiefsPlanet itself. I personally spend less time here than I used to and get less invested in games.

But I want OTHER PEOPLE to still be invested and tell me what I'm too lazy to learn on my own, dammit!

More so back in the day. The internet was still new and very few sites had options to collect all the news in 1 place. Now access to chiefs news is as easy as picking up your cell phone. It's not everything at once to discuss anymore.

Just to clarify, I haven't been a "leader" around here in a couple years now. But yeah, the mods do a pretty good job at holding the place together. My thread is more about brainstorming than about drawing conclusions - especially given that I have no power to implement anything.
