What big name free agent free safeties have played under Rex Ryan or Mike Pettine recently?

Berry is on the old draft pay scale and was drafted very, very high for a box safety. Crennel was an idiot for not putting Berry at FS from Day 1. That creates a problem when it comes time for his 2nd contract.
Dawan Landry got $6M from the Jets. Donte Whitner $7M from the 49ers. Both of these guys were signed on their third contract

Quote:
Most players are not going to want to play for less when they get a new contract and Berry is overpaid for a box safety imo.
He is, because of the dumb rookie rules from a few years ago. Tyson Jackson took an enormous paycut to go to the Falcons. I think Berry knows full well that his second contract isn't going to be nearly as high.

Quote:
Will Berry take less money putting him inline with other box safeties?
Will the Chiefs be willing to continue to pay a box safety like a FS?
Can they meet in the middle?

These questions need to be answered.

If the answers are 'No" then trading Berry might be beneficial in the long run.

They better have a plan either way.
If we're going to run the Ryan defense, Berry's a very critical piece. More important than the Free Safety. Calling him in an in-the-box safety is silly. TJ Ward is an in-the-box safety and outstanding at it. Pettine's decision to dump Ward and pay more for Whitner suggests Ryan guys are looking for more than just run thumpers. Berry/Whitner do the same things Ward does (stuff the run, cover tight ends, manage zone) but are also asked to frequently rush the passer and have the range to make a lot of plays traditional in-the-box safeties can't. I also believe Berry's smarts will help him tremendously too.

Now... I'm not sure if the Ryan defense is the right one. But what's great about Berry is if you switch defenses, he's versatile enough to be a stud Free too.

It's happened time and time again throughout the league. Players refuse to take a paycut with their existing team only to take one with a new team.

They seem to take it as an insult and are embarrassed to take less money.

The player would rather get cut and start for less with a new team.

Well yeah, but i would bet they are wanting to and trying to extend him. They never seemed to have any desire to keep Albert.

i'm not about trading Berry, but we are in a bind. If we lost Houston, this place is going to blow up like it did when we lost Jared Allen... Not good.

The Chiefs got paid handsomely for Allen. People on CP were sad to see him go, but not too many people were livid because the Vikings paid out the ass.

Obviously, agents are the player ego inflators. They have no loyalty and why should they? Still I hate that this is an agent driven league.

The Browns turned down a terrific strong safety in TJ Ward, in fact, to upgrade to Donte Whitner who can play Strong but has the versatility and range to do other things. Especially rushing the passer.

And yes, they are asked to do a lot mentally. Is it any surprise that your typically Ryan Strong Safeties are considered very smart? Landry, Leonhard. They play a lot of snaps inside the box so they communicate a lot with LBs. And there is so much complexity at that level especially with Safeties constantly making adjustments into a jayhawk formation or going in on blitzes. The Strong Safety makes the call on a lot of these adjustments and disguises.

I'm not sure yet if the Ryan defense is the right approach. But if we're running it, then the trend is that these defenses are throwing a ton of money at Strong Safeties, not Free.
I couldn't care any less about the way that other team's utilize other safeties, but none of those guys play 65 to 70% of snaps inside the box.

Berry is beng dropped in the box so much because of the LBs alongside DJ have been liabilities against the pass.
Just another example of the Chiefs failing to address a position on the defense, forcing them to move a player into a position that moves him away from his best attribute.

Berry was a ballhawking safety at Tennesee his first 2 years, and dropping him into the box so often just eliminates chances for him to to take the ball away the way he's capable of.

That's fine. But there are people acting like he doesn't deserve a big contract extension and doesn't measure up to some of the best in the game. What you're pointing out is that the talent is clearly there, but the talent around him doesn't let him do what he does best. And I would agree, I think he would do well in a Free Safety role and might be better suited (but that doesn't take away that he will also do well at Strong Safety).

Calling him purely an "in the box" safety undermines what he does. The Ryan scheme demands a lot more from a Strong Safety than a traditional defense does. That was made clear when Pettine passed up Ward and paid a lot more money for Whitner.
