I can't believe people still don't understand that tagging Houston was always going to happen.
They were never going to pay him after a 22 sack season.
He may get barely 12 next season his market value will fall and they will pay him.
He may tear his ACL next season. Who Knows. It's just business.

This also GUARANTEES another season of 110% effort.

I feel like you don't listen or you just tailor words to fit your gripe.

Let's say the Chiefs have offered $50 million to Houston in guarantees and he's said no, they've now offered $30 million in guarantees to Revis hoping he'll say yes.

In no way is that electing Revis over Houston. That's trying to pay Houston more than Revis, Houston's not taking it, you're not willing to go beyond where you think Houston's worth is so now you offer someone else what you believe their worth is.

You have to look at players as commodities. Moreover, you have to look at them as commodities with elastic demand curves. If you can't get a commodity at a price you're willing to pay for it, you go to your next best option and try to get that commodity at a price you're willing to pay for it. You don't offer the same price you offered for your favored position, you just keep offering several positions what you think are fair prices until one hits.

It's absolutely sensible in a cap environment. Would I rather spend $15 million AAV on Justin Houston than $12 million on Revis? Yup. But if Houston's demanding $20 million, then I'm going to take that $12, give it to Revis instead and find something else to do with the remaining $8.

This shit isn't as simple as you want it to be.

With this logic, its a wonder why teams give out more than 1 year contracts.

If they don't do the contract this year he'll be traded/gone.

He won't play for us. He's earned a big contract and from his POV he's being cheated out of his big payday by the team he played his heart out for...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Revis changes the whole way you are able to attack offenses that have good personnel.

If added to a defense with an elite pass rush like ours, it would elevate the entire defense to historic levels.

Houston
Revis
Hali
Ford
Poe
Bailey
Smith
DJ

Wow...that would be a truly stacked defense.

Also, guys like Revis aren't available in the draft...OL and depth are.

I love hearing that Dorsey/Reid/Clark are out there trying to TRULY bolster this team to give us a real chance to win something significant.

You're entirely missing the point.

While it would be nice to have a HOF CB, we surely don't need him.

Just yesterday people were talking about having the #2 ranked pass defense, and saying about another CB - "what's the point, will he make us the #1 instead of #2 passing defense?"

It doesn't make sense to spend that money at arguably our strongest position when we have so many other needs.

Pull the pickle out of your ass, sport.

I do look at it that way.

I also know that without DJ or Berry and with our castoff CB of the week we had one of the better pass defenses in the league. Most of that was due to the Hali/Poe/Houston trinity. Houston being the biggest part of that pass rush.

Even a corner like Revis doesn't have that kind of impact on the whole defense.

Houston leaves and it's not just the pass rush taking a step back it's the pass coverage as well. And that's compounded by the fact we couldn't stop the run last year worth a damn.

I could see, hypothetically, a guy like a Drew Brees having that type of impact for our offense.

Houston wins in every area. Age. Likelihood to stay for 3+ years. His position not being completely screwed over by new NFL rules.

Corner and pass rusher are spreading apart in value just like QB and RB are due to rules changes...

This is what teams do when they feel like they are close.
And a team with Alex Smith at QB will need an HISTORIC defense to win it all.
YOU KNOW THIS.
Luckily, it seems that the FO does as well, otherwise this would make no sense.

Look, it would be stupid to franchise him twice.

You could sign him long term and pay less in the short term.

To franchise him for a 2nd year would cost nearly $16.5 million.

You're talking almost 30 million for two years and you're not even getting that first year or two lower number that comes with a long term contract.

Negotiating an NFL contract is often a slow play game. I'm aware of that. I just don't want to see us giving away future cap space and ruling out a long term deal in the future...
