Favorite non-scripted television shows
I don't know if I'm getting old or what. But just about all I watch nowadays is shows like Mythbusters, Dirty Jobs, No Reservations, etc. Workaholics and the Kroll Show are the only two scripted TV shows I watch (I still like movies though). I'd love to discover more shows like this that I might be missing.
Here are my favorite shows right now: Dangerou Grounds - the host travels to hot spots around the world looking for unique high-end coffee. Coffee only grows in mountains in the tropics, which happen to be a lot of the poorer, more dangerous places in the world. I like the show because the guy seems pretty genuine, and it's just him and one camera man. So they can get into and out of some tight spots really quick. Also the scenery is amazing. River Monsters - Huge man-crush on Jeremy Wade. This show never fails to blow me away. Burger Land - the host travels the country for the best burgers. I like it because his favorite style of burger and mine seem to be the same - greasy meat, cheese and onions all fused together with the bun (like Town Topic - still looking for the equivalent in LA). And he gets into the history of the burgers in the places he goes. I enjoy them vicariously when I'm trying to follow my diet. Parts Unknown with Anthony Bourdain - I'm a huge Bourdain fanboy. Alaska State Troopers - for some reason I tend to watch marathons of this when I'm hungover. I guess because it makes me feel good about my situation. There is nothing more depressing than a modern Inuit village. |

Duck Dynasty is one of the most scripted/fake "reality" shows ever made. I cant believe how popular it is, and that so many people actually believe its real.

A few years ago there was a show called Three Sheets. This guy traveled around the world drinking, learning the cultures and then their hangover cures. I think you can still find it on Hulu.

On a similar note- Dave Attel used to have a show on Comedy Central about 10 years ago called 'Insomniac' that was pretty effin' funny. He used to drink his face off nearly every episode. That was probably my favorite non-scripted show ever. |

THAT always seemed unscripted.

Never watched Duck Dynasty. Don't know anything about it. Don't even know what channel it's on.
I'd like to keep it that way. |

I might be the only person on the planet that hates "reality" shows.
Even Sons of Guns turned into a pile of shit quickly. I will stick to Discovery Science, APL, and History channels for my reality shows. |

If we're loosening the parameters to scripted 'unscripted' shows, I gotta put a word in for BBC's Top Gear. Pure gearhead porn with a healthy sense of humor. Taking the most beautiful cars on earth to the ends of the earth in it's diverse beauty, always returning to the Top Gear track and 'Tame Raycing Drivuh' The Stig for comfort and familiarity, awesome cinematography, well-defined personalities. It really is the gold standard.

Yeah, put Clarkson in a shitty automobile and comedy is bound to ensue. My favorite running gag on the show is them running into the other guys' car when parking during their 'cheap car challenges.'

Well, here goes my "cool guy cred", which I had amassed over years of quality posts:
I really like Rick Steves' Europe. Yup, the fanny-packed man himself, with his hand-drawn maps and money belts, hosts one of my favorite shows on television. Other than that, Top Gear, The Life/Planet Earth series, and that's about it. Reality TV is mind-numbingly awful. Duck Dynasty is the closest I've come to enjoying a show, and that's because the producers hit a gold mine with those guys' personalities. I still won't watch it unless absolutely nothing else is on, there are no chores to be done, and it's snowing outside.

You're so far from being the only one. Even the History Channel has gone to complete shit. When it was "all Hitler all the time", it seemed to be a waste of a brilliant concept for a cable channel, but at least it was history. Now it's Alien Armageddon all the time. There's no wonder AMC is absolutely killing the ratings.
