Favorite non-scripted television shows
I don't know if I'm getting old or what. But just about all I watch nowadays is shows like Mythbusters, Dirty Jobs, No Reservations, etc. Workaholics and the Kroll Show are the only two scripted TV shows I watch (I still like movies though). I'd love to discover more shows like this that I might be missing.
Here are my favorite shows right now: Dangerou Grounds - the host travels to hot spots around the world looking for unique high-end coffee. Coffee only grows in mountains in the tropics, which happen to be a lot of the poorer, more dangerous places in the world. I like the show because the guy seems pretty genuine, and it's just him and one camera man. So they can get into and out of some tight spots really quick. Also the scenery is amazing. River Monsters - Huge man-crush on Jeremy Wade. This show never fails to blow me away. Burger Land - the host travels the country for the best burgers. I like it because his favorite style of burger and mine seem to be the same - greasy meat, cheese and onions all fused together with the bun (like Town Topic - still looking for the equivalent in LA). And he gets into the history of the burgers in the places he goes. I enjoy them vicariously when I'm trying to follow my diet. Parts Unknown with Anthony Bourdain - I'm a huge Bourdain fanboy. Alaska State Troopers - for some reason I tend to watch marathons of this when I'm hungover. I guess because it makes me feel good about my situation. There is nothing more depressing than a modern Inuit village. |

There's one I can like. I'm not into the Duck Dynasty, Ice Road Trucker, etc. genre, but improvisational comedy is great. Somewhat more scripted, but still improvisational, I'm a big fan of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

B. You don't really think Undercover Boss is legit, do you? All of these shows are scripted to some degree. Most of them are are complete bullshit. |

Undercover Boss looked like a great concept, but it only took one or two episodes to make it clear that the whole thing was fake. The concept might have made a good one-time documentary if you could find the right corporation with the adequately low profile boss, but it's impossible to make a series out of it.

Duck Dynasty is (poorly) scripted.

I enjoy Pawn Stars, but it's about 95% bullshit. Show participants have to sign waivers before they appear on camera, although the actual negotiations are supposedly legit. The store is closed while episodes are filming, and when the store is open, the stars don't work the counters anymore. That doesn't bother me so much, but some of the dumbass story lines they toss in are starting to grate a bit. Like an employee's going to call in sick and then stay home playing video games with a camera crew filiming him. Like Corey's going to give up that gig if he doesn't get an ownership share. Please. |

My favorite is Game of Thrones. I can't believe they get away with showing so much death right on screen, but I guess since it's reality...

In Pawn Stars, they're dicks to each other, but it's funny. And I have no doubt they were treating each other like that long before the cameras started rolling. Senior is a just a ****ing Neanderthal goon. |
