Nolan's Batman 3 Title

Batman sequel 'Rises' again

LOS ANGELES - THE next Batman sequel has a title: The Dark Knight Rises. Distributor Warner Bros. confirmed the name for director Christopher Nolan's third adventure about the DC Comics vigilante hero, which follows Batman Begins in 2005 and The Dark Knight in 2008.

The Dark Knight Rises is due in theaters July 20, 2012. Bucking Hollywood's current wave of 3-D movies, Nolan is not planning to shoot the film in 3-D.

Warner Bros had agreed with Nolan's argument that the sequel should resist the 3-D craze, the director told the Los Angeles Times' Hero Complex blog, which first reported the title.

Nolan would not reveal what villain might appear in The Dark Knight Rises, but he said it would not be the Riddler, one of the key bad guys in the comics and past film and TV Batman tales.

Earlier this year, Nolan said he would not resurrect the Joker, the cackling villain played by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. Ledger won the supporting-actor Academy Award for the role, a year after he died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs. -- AP

I think that, on ideological grounds, it's a stronger film than The Dark Knight. TDK has many of the same problems on the filmmaking side as TDKR, but it was more difficult to notice them because of how magnetizing Heath Ledger was. TDR did not hold up to repeated viewings for me, though.

My ranking of the trilogy?

Best: Batman Begins
2nd Best: The Dark Knight Rises
3rd Best: The Dark Knight
Congratulations on being the only person ever who has this ranking.

Honestly I am one who can't stand watching movies in theaters when its crowded, I have never seen such a quiet packed theater in my life. Might have gotten lucky, but everyone was paying attention.

You are the first person I've seen agree with me on this. I had this argument with people at work the last few weeks. I don't think it's even close. Batman Begins is a much better film. The Joker is the best performance, but aside from him that movie is very average.

I probably won't get to see TDR til next week.

Third viewing right now, still impressed. I can verify the crowds are very silent during the film, simply absorbing it all. Big cheer at the end though.

This is exactly how the crowds in my theater were. For all three films actually.

heh, funny story, i showed up early and there were maybe 20 or 30 of us qued up waiting to go in. The employee there starting handing out 3D glasses to everyone. A few of us were like "Ummm.....this isnt in 3D or shouldnt be?" I kinda started to get pissed. (because i hate 3D) I guess he talked to his boss because a few minutes later he came back, apologized and took the glasses back from everyone. Applaused erupted in the que line. : )

3D sucks. Why can't Hollywood understand this?

heh, because its a way to inflate ticket prices and make more money.

This is why i dont think this film will make more money than the Avengers because its not in 3D.

Id love to see the breakdowns in how much more money Avengers made because of inflated 3D ticket prices.

I posed the same thing in the spoiler thread just a minute ago.

FYI - If you haven't seen the movie, DO NOT click on the spoiler tag in this post.

My wife asked me what I thought of it as we walked to the car, and I couldn't even respond. So many powerful, emotional scenes.

Spoiler!

Seeing it again tonight in 15/70 IMAX. Thinking it's going to be even better the 2nd time around.
