2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Well, they didn't get rid of Bob Davis entirely, but he's been cut down to about 50 games, filling in for Denny. That is progress, at least.

Fair distinction. Any Royals fan who does not hate the White Sox is not really a Royals fan.

I put up a thread in the CasinoPlanet lounge, but still thought I'd bring it up here. Can't remember who set it up last year, but we had a RoyalPlanet fantasy league. We going to do that again?

I hate the city of Chicago period.

Chicago Fire, Chicago Bulls, Chicago White Sox, Bears, etc... it doesn't matter. That city is the shithole of the Midwest and they can burn it down again for all I care.

Oh damn, I think I might have been in that last year and forgot about it. Needless to say I don't think I'll be joining this year if I was in it last year. I've never gotten into fantasy baseball just because of how long the season is.

Royals pick up Yost's option for 2013

By Dick Kaegel / MLB.com | 02/14/12 12:00 PM EST

Royals management sent manager Ned Yost a special Valentine's Day message on Tuesday. They let him know he'll be back for the 2013 season.

The Royals announced that the club has exercised the 2013 option on Yost's contract.

Yost was hired as the Royals' 16th full-time manager on May 13, 2010, succeeding Trey Hillman, who was dismissed. Later that season, on July 31, Yost signed a two-year extension with an option for '13.

"It was real exciting seeing them all get to the big leagues last year, and then watching them play together and watching the way they finished up was real impressive to me," Yost said.

Yost's enthusiasm was apparent as he spoke from his office at the Royals' Spring Training complex in Arizona.

"What I like about this job is absolutely everything," Yost said. "I love the city, I love the ballpark. The ownership with the Glasses is phenomenal. Our front office is top-notch, our player development is top tier ... and these young players are a phenomenal group of talented young guys with awesome makeup. So there are really no downsides to this job at all -- none."

General manager Dayton Moore said that Yost's contract extension was made at the outset of Spring Training to avoid any speculation that this could be his last year as manager.

"Ned brings a professionalism, an intensity level, a passion to win each day," Moore said. "He does an incredible job of motivating players and an incredible job of leading."

He added that Yost has a knack of handling players, both youngsters and veterans.

"There's a strong sense of respect that players have for Ned," Moore said. "He keeps that line drawn for a manager-player relationship, and I think it's a healthy relationship that exists -- it's one of respect and control, and Ned has certainly done a tremendous job in creating an atmosphere in the clubhouse that's conducive to winning."

Yost previously spent six years as manager of the Milwaukee Brewers, and his overall record is 583-665 (.467). He was dismissed in September 2008, just before the Brewers reached the playoffs for the first time since 1982. This, obviously, is a different situation, but the extension gives Yost added security.

"It just makes it easier for me," Yost said. "Knowing you have two years, you don't have to answer questions about it being your last year and the distractions that go along with that."

The announcement came just after Yost checked in at the Royals' Spring Training clubhouse in Surprise, Ariz., for the first time this year. Even though camp doesn't officially begin for another week, Yost entered a busy place.

"It's a little cool, but [we've] got a clubhouse full of guys rarin' to go and we're starting the early pitching program today," Yost said. "Everybody's excited and everybody looks great, so it should be a fun day."

Yost's new pitching coach, Dave Eiland, was in camp for an optional session with his new charges.

"I think pretty much everybody's here," Yost said. "I haven't taken a head count, but there are a lot of faces out there. And there are a ton of position players out there, too. Billy Butler and Mike Moustakas -- I'm extremely proud of both of those guys. They could be in the best shape they've been in their careers. Billy looks great, and I didn't even hardly recognize Moose he looks so good."

Yost sounded ready to get started on 2012 -- and the season beyond that as well.

Really? I hate the White Sox but Cleveland, Detroit and St. Louis are way bigger shitholes.

I haven't got a clue who set it up or whatnot, but I'd be interested if someone sets this up. If not, that's fine, too.

Anyone got any thoughts on this? I know I hated it when we extended Yost's contract beyond being the interim manager, but have grown to kinda like him.

I've never played fantasy baseball. Does it require a lot of attention to your line up and such, like on a constant basis?

I like him. I'm glad to see his option picked up. I think he's a good manager... not perfect... but the players like him and seem to respect him and I think it's good to have the continuity especially now with all the kids taking over.

Yep, fantasy baseball is high maintenance, but you could devote a chunk of time to setting your lineups for the whole week rather than tweaking it every say.

Yes it takes alot of time. What I do is just set my position lineup and let it roll unless injuries hit or flat out suckage and change my pitching daily. I load up on pitchers in the draft.
