Off Season Lets Talk Guns

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

Uppers do not have the switches on them. Selective fire switches are on the lower. Additionally, non-selective fire lowers have a "shelf" on them. Uppers can be switched from a full auto to semi auto lower, generally speaking.

However, the bolt carrier group on guns designed to fire full auto (and milspec) are different than several commercial manufacturers semi-auto designs. I expect the commercial BCG would work, but would not last particularly long and could be unreliable. Good manufacturers of AR15's and M4geries use the full auto bolt carrier anyway.

Rock River calls the an M4 for some reason;

M4 feed-ramps.

It's when they grind out little ramps through the barrel into the receiver. They actually help quite a bit. Then again, M4 ramps on an AR receiver are pretty common these days (I believe RRA puts them on all their rifles).

Eh, whatever. The name's just a name; none of us are going to own a legitimate M4 most likely, unless we get badass permits that allow us to do so and I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna be getting one of those.

(D'oh! Verbal's right; the switch would be on the lower not the upper...dumbass me. **** it, listen to that guy, he seems to know his stuff)

They typically have M4 feed ramps, detachable carry handles, carbine length gas systems, 14.5" barrels with pinned on flash suppressors to make the barrel the legal 16", m203 cutouts, and collapsible stocks. In short, the Colt 6920.
My buddy calls his an Mfaux.

What hoops does one have to jump through to own a rifle that can be switched to "Rock and Roll"?

Oddly enough, my understanding is that the Class III license isn't that hard to get. It is a very extensive background check and it takes several months, but even many of the degenerates on this board could get it no problem. It is the collateral problems and the overwhelming cost that is the killer.

It is illegal for civilians to purchase a machine gun that was manufactured after 1986. As you can imagine, that has driven the price of pre-86 machine guns through the roof. You could get the Class III license, but are you willing to drop $20,000.00 on an M16 lower from the early 80's?

Then you would be absolutely foolish not to set up an NFA Trust for the weapon to be registered to. Otherwise if you die, your heirs are suddenly in possession of an illegal machine gun, and now, that gun will forever be illegal - as in there is no way to ever make it legal for civilians again...as in you just pissed away tens of thousands of dollars.

I keep hoping someone will come to my office and ask me to set one of those up...

I read an article on this some time ago. I also understand that if you do hold a Class III license, it gives the ATF full access to your goodies at all times, but if it's set up under a Trust, they can't touch you.

Interesting stuff.

Have not. Though the folks I've talked to have said it's fun...once. Mostly it's just spraying an assload of money downrange with no real chance of actually hitting anything.

The 3-shot bursts, OTOH, are supposed to be pretty cool. I haven't fired one of those either.

3 shot is more interesting to me than full auto.

I can't imagine taking an AR-10 and running it full auto.

I noticed that Red Jacket uses a full auto AR with 9mm bullets when someone wants to throw lead. That would be a little cheaper.
