And if you could read I mentioned that avy was intended to piss off the fanboys. I see it worked. I've said it before, I'll say it again: Apple products are overpriced. The iPad 2 for $500 is not bad, but more than I'd care to pay since I have little use for it. I'm sure its a cool device. And if it were $200, I'd own one now.

I don't hate Android... But Android is not a device, Android is an operating system. Based on my experiences with Android devices, either the hardware isn't actually as good as it claims to be, or the OS is buggy/not designed for a tablet.
To say I 'hate' any piece of tech outside of Acer and Sony laptops is incorrect. They're just pieces of plastic and metal. What I find irritating is the insistence that Android/RIM/anyone else who's putting a tablet on the market is going to put forth a better product in terms of user-friendliness, functionality, and overall quality than the iPad based on the fact that the non-Apple devices have higher technical specs. Furthermore, why anyone would assume that a first-generation product with a completely unproven operating system would be a better overall product than the second iteration of the product that literally invented this market makes no sense to me. If the hope is that one day, the Xoom or the Galaxy overtake the iPad, fine. But despite the fact that these devices (specifically the Xoom) do specific things better than the iPad by a small margin does not mean that the iPad isn't the better overall device at this point in time. I'm also puzzled by the argument that just because something is open-sourced, that makes it better. Yes, anyone can make an Android app and put it into the Marketplace. Think that might be related to why Android phones are more vulnerable to malware? Anyone can also make an iPod app. It needs to be up to a certain standard of quality to get into the app store. Now, is this system perfect? Of course not. Is it better than nothing? Hell yes. Quote:

The one thing that would make me get an iPad today was if it had a USB port. A real one.
I would love to have the iPad to take with me on trips or when I head down to the Smithstonian or maybe to a coffee house to do my writing and then transfer it to my computer when I got home. As it stands now, the only way to do that would be to e-mail the files to myself and then upload them. Can it be done? Absolutely, but it's inconvenient as hell. Nothing fancy. Just give me a USB port.

I eventually download to microsoft word once I get ready to publish (for formatting and editing, I find it superior), but I love to do my generative writing on google docs.

Exactly. I can access google docs everywhere and work on my projects regardless of how crappy the computer. Hell, I can even work on stuff on my iPhone if necessary.

Just found out that Windows 8 WILL be able to run on ARM based processors...
This, combined with Nvidia's Project Denver(64 bit ARM)... makes for a very interesting future... Intel should have a true low power x86 chip this month, but they are FAR away from being able to match Nvidia on cost... So, by this time next year you should have the following types of tablets... (listed descending in order of likely cost) Windows 8 x86 based tablets Windows 8 ARM based tablets Apple iPad3 Andoird 3.5(or whatever version number) Tegra3 based tablets I thought 2011 was going to be interesting.. but 2012 is really going to change things up! ARM based desktops, x86 tablets... craziness. |

You guys are missing the point.
It doesn't matter what software I use. I want the option to walk in the house, pull one device from the iPad and plug it directly into my computer. Using DropBox is the same as e-mailing the document to myself. It's another step I shouldn't have to take to move data from one device to another. It's not that there aren't work arounds. I just don't want to mess with them when an obvious and (to me) simple option should be available.

I agree for the most part... BUT it would be nice if you had the choice. Besides file transfers, there are other reasons why a USB connection would be useful.

I agree that they just need to make them with USB. I'm a fan of the cloud, but there are times when the USB is convenient especially if I'm collaborating with people who suck at computers (my students).
