Laguna Beach proper? It's awesome. I go there about once a year. If you're looking for a mature person's beach town, it's hard to beat. It's very small, so I might get bored with it if I live there, but it's a great place to visit, with restaurants, art galleries, and a nice beach with a small but pleasant boardwalk.
Note that there are other places inland like Laguna Niguel and I think some other Laguna town, and I know nothing about them. I suspect they're more like a nice California suburb.

I love it there. Great place to visit.
Traffic sucks. You can't buy a hovel there for under a million bucks. |

Well, there's an ocean with waves that meets up with land. The impact of the waves erode the land which forms sand and acts as a sort of segway between more solid, traditional land and the ocean.
I hope that specificity matches the question. |

So Mr Rain Man, I imagine you staying at the Montage. Any recommendations on where to stay?

You really want to be as close to Broadway and Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) as possible. That's the nice downtown area and there are a few hotels in that area. The Inn at Laguna has the truly amazing location if you get an oceanview room. You pay for it, apparently, but it's the top end in terms of views and proximity. http://www.innatlagunabeach.com/ (Caveat: I haven't stayed there so I don't know about the rooms, but I've walked by it a million times. It's up on a cliff over the beach with 'wow' views.) I suspect you can get nice views at the other hotels in the immediate area, too, but the Inn at Laguna is up on a cliff so it stands out, and you can easily walk to the nice beach and downtown area. The time share I use is Marriott Newport Coast, which is very nice, but you have to drive everywhere because there's nothing within walking distance. It's about five miles north of Laguna, and it's a great place if you just want to relax and hang out at the pool and do day trips to Laguna, Balboa Island, Huntington Beach, etc. They're two-bedroom condos, so they're expensive unless you're taking more than two people. For the cost, I'd recommend the Inn at Laguna unless you have a good use for the second bedroom. They key at the Marriott is to get an ocean view room, which has really nice views. If you don't get an ocean view, the value goes down significantly. It's about a half-mile from the water, but is up high on a hill so the views are really good. By owning the time share (which was a gift), I get really good rates at the Marriott, but if I was paying retail, I'd definitely take one of the hotels near Broadway. That Montage place looks nice, but the location isn't great. You're going to be driving to town, and that stretch of the highway isn't a fun place to walk around.

I stopped in Laguna Niguel last April. We went to Aliso Beach, which was very small but super chill. We stayed and watched the sunset. There were several other groups there that had lit up bonfires. It was nice.
For what it's worth, we flew into San Diego and stayed downtown, hit La Jolla, Laguna, LA, and then Vegas for a few days. Laguna was easily my girlfriend's favorite stop. |
