The 90s are such a polarizing decade of music for me. Lots of really, really good shit (Pavement, Oasis, Modest Mouse, Neutral Milk Hotel, Primal Scream, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Sublime, Rage Against the Machine, Beastie Boys, Biggie/Tupac/Nas etc) but also some of the most overrated bands (Nirvana, Pearl Jam [barf], Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, sellout REM) and overall terrible pop music.
My favorite song is probably Gold Soundz by Pavement, though.

I ignored 90s music at the time, in the last 5-10 years have discovered some that I think is fantastic. STP and Soundgarden; Cat Power and some of the other female acts of that time I really like.
I get nostalgic for the 90s now, was a much less tense era. |

Much less tense in the alternative/grunge/rock genres. Hip-Hop/rap on the other hand...

You guys have any radio stations that do a flashback hour to the 90s like the 90s at noon or anything like that?

96.5 The Buzz does a 90's at Noon type thing. Usually a nice, eclectic mix of 90's stuff. I often hear TOOL on there, even - MUCH to my delight, of course.

"Never Be Your Woman" by White Town is an all timer.
Cake's "The Distance" was also an ace tune. "Dr. Worm" by They Might Be Giants. "Flim" by Aphex Twin was probably the best electronic song of all time, if you like complex rhythms. "Sugar" by System of a Down was just a shitkicker of a tune. Blur's "Coffee And TV" was the groove of the decade. So many great songs. I've got more if anybody likes these recommendations. The 90s were great for off-kilter musical stylings. |
