The World War I Museum is supposed to be awesome. Of course, the day we went they were closed.

If you're ever in search of food around the Speedway, there are two places in the Legend's/Speedway area worth a crap... Arthur Bryant's and Pepperjax. Besides that, drive past the chains and there are several relatively hole-in-the-wall places that are really good.... Italian Delight, Don Antonio's (authentic Mexican), Roscoe's BBQ, Taqueria Arandas.
Check out Union Station exhibits when it gets closer to that time, they have some good stuff (a Pompeii exhibit at the moment that I'm sure is great), might find something interesting for everyone. Say hi to everyone for me.

That's an outstanding suggestion. A brief online search shows that this might be one of the best museums in the country. And honestly I know next to nothing about World War I. Yanking the kids out of school for 3 days, I can justify it with that. Thanks Frazod!

When I was a kid, we would drive down from Iowa for 2 nights...we'd do Royals games both nights...and usually one day we'd spend at Worlds of Fun, and we'd go to Cool Crest and I'd try to get some autographs in the parking lot as the players came in.
We would stay at the Adam's Mark and walk over. So many great memories... |

There's also the Arabia Steam Boat Museum (IIRC we went there when we couldn't get into the World War I place). The Arabia was a steamship that sank in the Missouri River back in the 1800s. Eventually the river shifted, and years later the wreck site was unearthed and excavated. They have a few parts of the ship and a lot of artifacts, although they are rather mundane. It is fairly interesting, though. And won't take a ton of time to go through it.
Could be another "educational" excuse for pulling the kids out of school. |

The Escape Room stuff might be fun for the family... there are a couple downtown (both a few blocks from Steamboat Arabia), Breakout KC and Escape Room Kansas City (and Minsky's Pizza is right there, which is great). You have an hour to find clues that lead you to more clues that eventually lead you to a key to get out, and they have different difficultly levels. I think there's also one around Union Station, and I've done The Exit Room in Lee's Summit.

Oh yeah, I'm not knocking it. But I'm pretty sure it's going to suck compared to the WWI Museum.

I doubt that anyone here is familiar enough with Kansas City to provide useful information.

Here's the website for the WW I museum: https://www.theworldwar.org/
Does anyone know if they re-opened the tower there? If so, check that out. Union Station is right across the street, BTW. You might want to check out the Nelson, too. www.nelson-atkins.org/ If you want to go to the Negro League Museum, the original Arthur Bryant's is in the same area. The museum shares space with the Jazz Museum. |

Many museums are closed on a Monday so be prepared for that.
GBlowfish took me to the Truman Presidential Library and I was blown away. It was fantastic, learned so many things I never knew about Truman, and there was hardly anyone there. I would go for sure. Next which may sound funny is the Kansas City Zoo. I really liked it and thought it was laid out nice. It's big. For your kids in their age range, you may want to ask them if they would like to go. I went the first time to KC at 50 years old and had a blast. I think taking two daughters at their age to the Negro Baseball Museum or WWI would be a waste unless your family splits up for the day and the women go one way while the guys go another. Young girls at that age would get real bored IMHO but you know their likes best so use your best judgement. Lastly, We were going to go to Arthur Bryant's but the line out the door had us go to Gates. It was excellent. Hope that helps.
