I'll use my situation as an example. I graduated high school with a terrible GPA, no direction in my life, and no idea what the hell interested me at the time. If it wasn't for my dad forcing me to go to school, I am not sure what would've happened to me. I believed that I didn't have any meaningful passions that I could use in college. Well, one thing that I didn't realize at the time was my love for analytics and data in general. The one thing I didn't completely **** up in high school was that I was a pretty damn good hockey player, and was focused primarily on it after my grades went to shit. In addition to that, I was into stats, analytics, numbers, anything. I'd literally stay up all night looking at statistics for upcoming opponents and gameplan days, weeks ahead of time. It was something I was called crazy for at the time. I got laughed at for how seriously I took studying opponents statistics. Well, I eventually (2-3 years later now) realized that was my passion, and not just for sports. I want to go in business as well. Right now I am feeding my passion for sports by working in marketing with the KU athletic department, while also feeding my passion for analytics by having that as my major. I am in a good spot right now, but it wouldn't have been without realizing that I had a love for staying up all night scouting other high school hockey teams when I was 15-16 years old. |

I am so pumped for this playoff game. Debating if I want to shell out money for tickets. Need to prioritize, but if I can find a couple buddies who are wanting to go.. it'd be hard to pass up. I've never seen a home playoff game at Arrowhead, but I am sure it'd be an awesome experience for the memory bank.

My son and I have been kicking it together all season watching it at Apple Bees or anyplace we can. I've enjoyed this season primarily because my son has been asking me all kinds of football questions and asks about all the Chiefs greats I grew up with and I tell you what I am soaking it up as a father. He is 15. |

I could see myself thriving in a job in business, think I have the mindset for it. So I tend to lean towards that. I'm mainly just waiting on getting a car (which I should be getting very soon - within a month or so) so I can get to school/work easily. |

Really hoping for a Fins/Chiefs game. My best friend is a DIEHARD Fins fan so it would definitely be an interesting matchup for me. Wouldn't be surprised if these two teams meet a couple times in the playoffs over the next few years. Fins may not go deep this year but their future appears to be very bright. Anyway, I have full confidence in the Chiefs to go all the way. My Rangers nearly did it a couple of years ago but blew way too many games in the series to deserve it. Hope the Chiefs run ends better than that one did, to say the least. |

As someone who has a little bit of experience in sports, I have learned some things that I can tell you about. I've been in marketing, but there are many other options that you can dive into whether it's facilities, technology, or even sales. One truth to working in sports is that the best way to break into the industry is at ground-level. It's very hard to get a job in sports with no prior experience within sports. This means internships are key, sometimes unpaid (which can suck, but it depends on the mindset and the organization). The positive in this is as much as free work sucks, there are plenty of open positions to start out and see if it's what you want to do. I have worked two unpaid internships, each with marketing. One with a very small university, and one with KU. I didn't care for my old school, it was boring work, the school had no money to spend on promotions, and I was one of maybe 7-8 interns IIRC. Never got to know any of the other interns and didn't feel like I had a place there. Told myself I was done working in sports. Then the summer came along and one of the full-time staff members of the KU AD I had been emailing back and forth with followed up from a previous conversation from months prior of me getting some information about their internship program. I was in Lawrence when he followed-up, interviewed with him the next day and before I knew it I was an intern in the KU AD "to see how it'd go" and it ever since then I have had the time of my life. A complete 180 from my first internship. All of the interns are all great friends, some are the best ones that I have, I get to work in AFH, the positives are endless, but I don't get paid. It's something I just have to live with for the time being. The key is getting that preliminary experience and then working your way up from there. Some of it will suck, but every full-time staff member that works in the marketing office (including the head of marketing for KU Athletics) started in the same shoes that I am in now. They were all unpaid interns at one point. All of them. If you have a passion for the work, then you'll be just fine. It's a lot of fun, and the experiences are great.
