On a related note, I read an article about a trail runner here in Boulder. He was apparently a highly ranked trail runner, but he fell off a trail and broke his lower leg badly. He had a ton of surgeries on it, and in the end they decided that the best course of action was to amputate it.

I had no idea that happened with a broken leg. I didn't know it could get that serious.

I broke a leg roller skating. Fibula, same one as Carr. I never knew there was some risk of permanent damage.

You mean they didn't have to amputate? Wow, according to the internet, by now Carr should have had his leg hacked off with a rusty tree saw while biting down on a towel after a shot of whiskey.
