I'm in the same sort of situation sort of. We send our 13 month old over to our neighbors. She watches 2 other toddlers, a 3 year old, and has a 1 year old of her own. She also has a 3 year old, a 4 year old, and a 8 year old of her own, but they go to preschool/school most days.
Anyhow, we are definitely trying to get our son into a school type environment. We feel that now he's old enough to learn and do better in a more structured environment. Unfortunately, all of the places we want have a pretty long waiting list. The private school we intend to use doesn't start until 4 years old.

We found that by the time our sone was 3- 3 1/2" he wasn't getting enough socialization at normal home daycare. We moved him to a formal daycare/preschool setting where he was with more kids his age and an educational curriculum.
Be aware "Montessori" means whatever they want it to mean (and usually thats more $$) as there is no certification or set standard.

My biggest concern right now is that he still can't tell you what's going on. the Babysitter knows him and is focuses on him...not sure I'm ready to turn him loose yet in a bigger environment yet... |

I don't know a ton about the Montessori concept - doesn't that involve a lot of "let them figure things out on their own" concepts?

If you think this is hard, just wait until you have to send him to college!

Montessori schools were ridiculously expensive nearly 20 years ago when we looked at them. Can't imagine their prices haven't skyrocketed since.
Just do your due diligence on wherever you choose to place your kid, and remember more expensive does not in any way equal better care. |

Pete, if you don't already have a 529 plan set up for your son, stop what you're doing and get it done right now.

If you do, just be sure to tell all your friends about it repeatedly.

My 2 1/2 year old son has been in Montessori since August. It was an adjustment with him in learning the Montessori way, but after a few weeks he almost a different kid. He was wanting to do everything for himself( This is a pro and con with a toddler). It has been amazing to see the transformation with his development. We did a center before and is was mostly playing and very little learning exercises.
One day a few weeks ago he came up to me and introduced himself to me and shook my and and said it was nice to meet me. I couldn't rave enough about our place. We pay a pretty penny with it though. You will just have to do your research on what's best for you and your family. |

For instance, my Dad & Step Mom were in over Christmas. My Son loved I mean loved to take baths. After 2 baths with my Step Mom it has been a struggle getting him to take a bath. And it isn't the "I don't wanna do it" temper tantrum. It's the "I'm scared, please stop" crying. But we have no idea what he is suddenly afraid of. So I have to extrapolate that to being in a day care where more things can happen to him and he cannot tell me what's wrong. |
