Help me build a new rig

Open to advice as it's been a decade-plus since I built my own desktop.

Here's my needs:
  • Primary use is photo editing in Lightroom, no gaming. So I'm thinking decent on board graphics will suffice?
  • I have a 4K Samsung 28-inch monitor, so nothing needed there.
  • Would like smallish, but that's not a necessity if it's more cost efficient to go with a standard mini tower or something.
  • No DVD ROM needed.
  • Decently hot, semi bare bones system.
  • Would like SSD for system, and at least 1TB for storage.

And go.

Also, dvd's are pretty worthless to even have now days. My computer doesnt even have one hoooked up. Dont think i have had a dvd drive for about 3 years now.

How do you load the OS without a DVD?

Most of the programs I use are now downloadable but there are still a few that require DVD's. For $18 dollars, it's worth it, IMO, to have one installed. Plus, if you ever need to burn anything for any reason...

bootable USB drives. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...-refresh-media i guess you do need a dvd drive. I made mine off my sisters laptop though.

I don't really care about the drive. I can take it or leave it. Worst case, I can use my external USB DVD-R we have for our laptop.

I use the integrated Intel HD4000 graphics without issue to drive a pair of 24" LED/LCD monitors.

If you're a gamer (which I'm not), you may want a GFX but for my purposes, it's not necessary.

That's cool. I have an external USB DVD drive laying around here somewhere but for $18 dollars, I'd just as soon not fool with it.

It's easier than ever these days and I can put one together in under an hour. These new cases come with prewired USB harnesses, too.

I bought it so I could install Lightroom. But before or after, I can't actually recall the last time I used a DVD drive in the computer...

I just spec'ed out that second one I posted on Parts Picker, with the only upgrade being a 500GB SSD instead of the one I listed, and cost came out over $1700.

Yeouch.

I think a 250 gig SSD System Drive is more than sufficient. You'll want to work off of your extra internal drives (I'd recommend one for data and the other for backup - or at least a backup external).

I have Windows 8.1 and scores of programs on my OS drive and it's at 86 gigs with 145 gigs free. I don't store anything on it other than programs.

It wasn't much more expensive than the 500GB, which is why. I have every intention of using my SSD for programs and the spinning disk for storage. But when the price difference between the 250 and the 500 was not much to worry about, I went bigger. Certainly wasn't $100 difference. And that's ME building it rather than the other company building it.
