I've actually read several articles on studies that seem to indicate people who drink diet soda tend to be heavier than those that drink regular soda. It's probably more the other choices they make (i.e. I can have that cheesecake because I had diet soda instead of regular) but it's interesting.

The papers I've read shows that is true only when someone first starts using artificial sweeteners (you'll get a minor insulin spike). Your body figures it pretty quickly, though, and the insulin spike goes away.
