Yeah, we're the only team that might exercise that option, and if we do, it would be at least partially for non-baseball reasons.
For example, if Butler heroically powers us into the playoffs in September, and then does well in the postseason, then it would be a hard sell to tell the fans that 12.5MM is too much, even if it would be the correct decision. If Butler does well enough that we actually reach that point, then I'd just hope we didn't sign him to some ridiculous new contract, just pay the man his money, and move on in 2016.

One more thing........ I don't know how much the Coaches are talking with Dyson right now relative to his base running. But, it's embarrassing to see a guy that is as fast as he is on the base paths, have so little discipline with making good decisions. Between getting picked off base, and over-running the bases, he has turned his advantage into a liability. I pray that shit is being addressed, but somehow, I think that's wishful thinking

If he truly wants to stay in KC, he will sign for less $$$.
But he can generate a decent contract in the open market if he hits well here on out, especially for a lower level team needing a DH/1st base back up that is willing to roll the dice they can revitalize his hitting stroke.

Me thinks he wants to play everyday so bad, he is being so aggressive and pressing to accomplish great things when the offense is struggling. You are correct, he doesn't have to, he can jump start the offense by getting on base, BH's, walks, HP's, any damn way! His presence on the base paths is enough to allow pitchers and catchers to mess with the pitch selection for a RBI guy to bring him in! Just be Dyson, not the superhero Dyson he wants to be.

He is what he is: A contact hitter who will hit between .270 and .290, with little power, no glove, no speed, who has the ability to go on streaks where he laces balls into the gap (doubles hitter). Problem is, his stats are trending down in the last two years, especially Hits, Walks, RBI, HR's, SLG% and OPS. The uptick to Billy is that he's only 28 yrs old. The real question is whether he can get back close to 2012 form: .313, .373, .510, .882, with 29 HR's and 107 RBI. If it were my money, I would't bet on it.

this team has suffered tremendously from individuals trying to be the hero of the day recently.
-Duffy and Guts with their pick off attempts -Perez and Moose (sometimes Cain)swinging at everything. Don't be a hero, just throw strikes and stop swinging at balls FFS.

MLB players are not allowed to renegotiate their contracts for less money. At best, the MLBPA allows players to defer money if they get paid a fair interest rate.

Geez they gave Billy a game off. Not that big of a deal especially considering who they were facing.

Ibanez is .169 .260 .289 .549. That's like giving up your bat at the DH spot. That's a pretty big deal in my opinion - especially for a Team that has little to no offense right now. Also, a day off for Billy? We are fighting for a playoff spot for the first time in 29 years, suck it the f up. Not to mention, all he has to do is swing the bat.

I really hope the Royals are having an extensive "hitting with a runner at third and less than 2 outs - how not to swing at balls several feet out of the strike zone" clinic today.

I guess I am wrong here. I thought if we do not choose his option, he becomes a FA and can negotiate with any team, including us. But I do not want him back if we are keeping Willingham. If we do not keep Josh or grab a BIG bat in FA, I would think about it at a much smaller contract. ( providing it was an option ) .

I could be happy with Billy if he could do that every year, I do not know of many on here that would not. But that one little word says it all .....if.
