USA Today predicts Chiefs at 4-12 for 2014

I could see it happening but really 6-8 wins seems pretty doable.

AFC West

Broncos 12-4 (2): Could be better than 2013 team even if wins and offensive output dip. But schedule is murderous.

Chargers 8-8: Last year's schedule allowed late-season charge. This year's could easily produce late-season slide.

Chiefs 4-12: Tight salary cap meant crippling free agent defections, and they didn't sufficiently reload in draft.

Raiders 3-13: Best thing influx of over-the-hill vets can do is change culture. Carr, Mack promise brighter days ahead.

A good many things look ****ED right now, no question about it, I'm just not convinced that things cant be turned around... for example the offensive line looked like shit last year, too and I called for Hecks head about it, but he eventually got things stabilized.

Just because things have looked rough, doesnt mean it cant be ironed out.

I also think that our offensive performance in the second half of last year might only be the tip of the iceberg, they were just then getting comfortable in the system/with each other... is it a ridiculous leap of faith to think they can improve on that in their second season? Not in my opinion.

Lotta football left to play, 9-7 could easily get us into the playoffs again, hell even 8-8's are getting in these days.

I don't get this at all.

The Chiefs have been just good enough to get to the playoffs once every four years and they NEVER WIN.

The Dorsey / Reid plan is the EXACT same process that has been repeated since Marty Schottenheimer was hired in the 80s. Trade for some other team's backup quarterback, try to assemble a good defense and hang around .500% to eke out a playoff berth or perhaps the division title in a down season for the other 3-4 AFC West franchises.

It doesn't win. It. Does. Not. Win.

Yet Chiefs' fans are totally okay with this mediocrity while teams like San Francisco, Indianapolis and Seattle are (or at least capable of) winning consecutive division titles and winning postseason contests because they refuse to trot out retread QBs like Steve Bono Elvis Grbac Trent Green Matt Cassel Alex Smith and instead take chances in investing a top 50 draft pick on a guy worth developing.

The only thing separating a 4-12 team from a 9-7 with a playoff loss team is draft position.

If we choke this season away, or eek into the playoffs and get spanked again, then get back to me and let it rip... until then you're just rehashing a bunch of sour grapes that may or may not turn out to be true for THIS team THIS year.

The writing is on the wall. The offensive line isn't good enough to give Smith the 5+ seconds of clean pocket for him to feel comfortable in throwing the ball, he only has two options that are consistent NFL talents in catching the ball -one of which is a RB. Defensively the team can't pressure elite QBs with any sort of certainty and the secondary can't cover owing to their own deficiencies in terms of skill and because the rules don't allow contact with receivers.

Every single year is different, I dont care if it sounds cliche, its true.

Different players, different coaches, different GM's, different era's... history does not have to repeat itself.

The biggest question is this, if Alex Smith isnt yet finished growing in this system, if the second half of last year was just a taste... do you think he's good enough to win the Super Bowl?

I do, teams have won it with far less talented QB's, and that includes the modern era too, IMO... the only thing a guy like Flacco has on Smith is the bigger arm, period, end of story.

And a much better defense...

And a much better offensive line...

And a much better WR corps...

Just those 4 things. That's all.

The offensive line isn't any worse than it was last year.

Fisher is probably a little less consistent than Albert, and Stephenson is probably a little more consistent than Fisher.

I'm already ready to call Fulton an upgrade over Asamoah, who was god awful. Plus, our depth is much better than last year.

If anything, it's a wash from last year's which wasn't always ideal, but it worked pretty dang well at times.
