Malaysia Airlines loses contact with plane carrying 239 people
Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane with 239 aboard enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
The airline said in a statement early Saturday it was attempting to locate the Boeing 777 after it lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. It was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m. China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported the plane was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, and did not make contact with Chinese air traffic controllers. The plane is carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members. The airline said it is working with authorities to locate the plane. They both have circuit breakers right in the cockpit. Just have to pull them. There are alot of systems that run off the landing gear proximity switches. It wouldn't take much to include the cockpit voice recorder and flight recorder to the proximity switch to where any time the landing gear is up, they will both be running. I'm willing to bet, this will happen. At this time though, the flight crew has the breakers right there behind them. Not sure why this hasn't been thought of before, but I'm willing to bet it will be that way from now on. I'm not just talking out my ass either. I've been working on planes all my working life.

Australian press conference right now indicates they've heard two more black box pings in the last 24 hours. One for 7 minutes and one for 5.

I'm pretty sure they are listening for the electronic locating transmitter. It has nothing to do with the cockpit voice recorder or the flight recorder. It's only an electronic transmitter the is set off automatically in an accident. It's only to locate the plane. It will tell them nothing at all about the activities on the plane.

And if, when they ever find the plane and the black boxes, they will only show the activity on the plane up until the breakers were pulled.

I think I heard at some point that they've never heard anything from the emergency locators, and no one knows why. Aren't those the things that are buoyant and are supposed to pop to the surface?

That would be good too. But what if you lose engines? Gear up means you are in the air. Of course you could combine the two . Either engines running or gear up. Maybe even Altitude. They could easily be combined. It should not be left up to only the flight crew as it is now.

Just did some searching. You are right. The voice recorder and flight recorder do have their own pinging devices. I'm a little smarter now. |
