This is a GREAT suggestion. Backup everything to an external drive. Not only are you then protected if your PC dies but you can take it with you on vacation and stuff and never have to worry about having all of your data burn up in a fire while you're gone (I've seen it happen).

A 2.5" enclosure and 5400rpm laptop HDD are dirt cheap and the peace of mind is WELL worth it.

Everything needed, under budget, shipped price to the door with warranty and tech support, new keyboard and mouse etc etc. Have used these guys before and they stand behind the PCs they build.
Dude, that's an interesting one. Windows 7 as well! I'll ask the wife (she knows more than me) and some computer friends I have. Thanks a ton for that link.

I think you might have a hard time beating price on that one.

I've bought quite a few parts from 3BTech. They're pretty decent to deal with. I even had to send back some parts once because I bought the wrong thing and they were very helpful.

I was just thinking about something. Maybe you guys can offer some opinions.

If he decides to go with an AMD APU, he needs to remember that the APU uses your system RAM to power the graphics rather than having its own dedicated RAM like you'd see on dedicated GPU. Normally, people recommend slightly more system RAM because of this. This would be true, of course, with any on board graphics chipset, even with Intel. So I guess, if not buying dedicated graphics, recommend a bit more RAM for handling anything more intensive.

Windows 8.1 needs 2GB of RAM in 64-bit mode on its own. Something to consider I guess.

I'd rather not have Windows 8 as most don't like it. Can anyone tell me why or why not this is true?

Most do not like the new "Start" screen, which is most ideally suited for tablets/touch screen/mobile.

The Windows 8.1 upgrade slightly addressed this issue by allowing the users to set Windows 8 to start up to desktop. It still has a slight learning curve to it, because you still need to access your "Apps" via the Start screen or create links to them on your desktop. Functionally, it really isn't that much different from Windows 7, but visually it is.

Also, from the Start screen, there is an arrow that you click that takes you to your apps, which is a scrolling group of small tile links. All you do is move your mouse left or right and it scrolls automatically through your apps. It isn't terrible, it just isn't what people grew accustomed to.

The one positive is the security of Windows 8.1 is superior to Windows 7. Also, there is knowing that you aren't one more version further back in the cycle.

If you want I can take some screen shots.
Not sure what others think. Personally, I hated 8.1 the second I installed it, but after using it for a while I got very used to it and it doesn't really bother me any more. Do note that Windows 8 cannot be set to load to desktop, but 8.1 can be.

BTW, the new 800 series mobile graphics cards look rather interesting.

The price point is attractive, and the performance is within reason.

If that's the case, why not invest in something a little more powerful then?

When you're talking about low-end computers, there's really no reason to get a desktop, even if that's ideally what you need in your physical space.

Desktops are all about performance, IMO.
