Justice League on track to lose Warner Bros. 'between 50 and 100 million.

Justice League on track to lose Warner Bros. 'between 50 and 100 million

Justice League’s opening weekend at the box office should have called for a celebration.

Considering Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman all opened to over $100 million (the former taking $160 million), you would expect the Avengers-style blockbuster to make at least that much.

However, despite being a gigantic superhero event — Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Aquaman, and the Flash finally teaming up to defeat evil — cinema-goers just weren’t as excited as Warner Bros. predicted.

Tracking for a $110 to $120 million opening weekend, Justice League took $96 million at the US box office, making just over $280 million worldwide. Unfortunately, despite still being a huge number, the studio is reportedly on track to lose $50 to $100 million once the movie has played out of cinemas.

Fox is doing okay with the X-Men franchise but they need to give FF back to Marvel so at least Marvel can use Doom.

It's at $481 million worldwide in less than two full weekend's release.

That's not tanking and while it may not equal Batman v Superman, it's not going to lose $100 million, especially after VOD and DVD/Blu Ray sales.

Dane is right. There are no fees/splits except for foreign so right now the film has banked around $280mm in the first two weeks. Figure $350mm-$400mm production/marketing budget and they should be in the black before the theatrical run is over. Anything else is gravy.

The bigger problem is that they seemed to have whiffed on establishing the new characters they need for future movies based on what I read. Haven’t seen the movie yet.

DC has made a number of mistakes, not only with handing their Universe to Zach Snyder, but by not using the same cast from their TV shows, specifically, The Flash.

Ezra Miller was fine but kids following The Flash on CW are confused and in my own personal polling, didn't like him as much as Grant Gustin, who've they've grown accustomed to seeing each week.

It was a really dumb decision by Geoff Johns and WB. It would be like Agents of Shield casting a different Tony Stark than RDJ or a different Thor than Chris Hemsworth.

It's amazing how WB has this cash cow right in front of them and they can't stop tripping over their own feet.

After the popularity of the Flash series I have no idea why they didn't at least attempt to roll that over.

It's amazing how it's turned.

DC is killing on TV and Marvel is now killing on the big screen.

20 years ago Marvel was begging for a TV slot and DC was killing on the big screen...

But let's not pretend as if Lucasfilm has avoided the same pitfalls as WB when it comes to their In-Universe.

Michael Arndt was hired to pen Episode VII, then fired after Abrams took over. Abrams was pissed that he had to take his family to Europe for a year and made a huge stink. Brad Bird was their first choice and Abrams was way down the line. The story was a bland clone of the original. Abrams needed input from Steven Spielberg and Ava Duvernay, which led to re-shoots as well.

Josh Trank was hired to helm a Boba Fett film but after his disastrous Fantastic Four (and massive use of cocaine, trashing the home he rented, etc.) was unceremoniously dumped. Gareth Edwards was hired to pen and direct Rogue One, of which 40% was re-shot and re-written by Tony Gilroy.

Chris Miller and Phil Lord were hired to direct Solo, with a screenplay by Larry Kasdan. After 4 months of shooting and directly disobeying KK and Kasdan (who's Star Wars Royalty), they were fired and replaced by Ron Howard, who re-shot the entire film and re-cast some of the actors.

Colin Trevorrow was hired to script and direct Episode IX but after The Book of Henry tanked and was a critical nightmare, KK fired him and hired Jack Thorne to write IX. Less than a month later, Thorne was fired and replaced by Abrams and Chris Terrio, with Abrams directing Episode IX.

The bottom line is that Lucasfilm has had just as many, if not more, hirings and firings than DC but her gambles have paid off, at least through two movies.

How the hell do you keep up with all of that? It's like five soap operas running simultaneously.

Not sure if that would even work though.

It would be easier to just purchase the 21st Century Fox Film division

The whole thing just feels patched together. Everything is a fix from fan response, course correction, or overresponse to Marvel. There seems to be no singular, unifying vision like Kevin Feige.
