No you don't. As far as the computer operation is concerned, the SSD functions in exactly the same way as the platter drive did, just faster. It's completely unnecessary to do a fresh install when replacing a platter drive with a SSD. Clone the old drive directly to the SSD and boot it up.

I use a Mac for such tasks because it's so much easier. But any cloning app, like Norton Ghost, would work fine.

Whether cloning works or not, while you'll have to spend time backing up files(which you should do anyways) and reinstalling programs with a fresh install, you get rid of bloatware and unused misc files, which is helpful when you're cutting your C-drive space by at least half.

I've used Ghost in this manner hundreds of times. How did it fail? What did it tell you? Was the SSD formatted correctly?
